(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)Disney Park Fandom is the goofiest
I think they mean that watching an LP of a story-driven game is a bit different from watching someone's weird bootleg phone video of the Haunted Mansion.
Re: DA
Not everyone likes them - I prefer to play a game myself since I like feeling really immersed and not listening to other peoples' voices and figuring out puzzles (though they can be fun to watch for a game I've already played) - but who am I to say those who don't like them can't enjoy them?
Re: OP here
(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)Let's explore your bad metaphor. So say someone goes to Disneyland, but doesn't go on any of the rides because they get motion sickness. They would have missed what some people consider a big part of Disneyland.
In comparison, because they didn't explore EVERYTHING at Disneyland, they didn't go.
Yeah, go find a better bad metaphor to support your stupidity.
Re: OP here
(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)"I'm not good at games" is the excuse I keep hearing and I'm sick of hearing it. Even if you're allergic to challenge most games come with an easy mode anyway.
I'm going to chime in here
Like, me? I am SHIT at games. I die constantly if I play on anything but the easiest setting. It takes me months of nonstop play to reach a level that most people would consider decent with any given game. This is slowly improving as I get older, but I have the sinking suspicion that I will still be a worse-than-average player in 20 years.
But I still play the games, and I love them. I have friends who watch LPs and while I've tried to watch a couple, I feel like some essential magic is missing, even in very story-heavy games. Just watching someone play a game is nowhere near as satisfying and fulfilling as actually playing it, imo, and I personally think that most people who say otherwise just don't realize how much better it can be (MOST, I say, not all. I know people are different.). And I think it's because games are, by definition, interactive experiences, and there will always be a certain amount of impact lost when the interactive portion is removed, as it is in LPs.
That said, I understand that many people who watch LPs are not doing it because they are "bad at games" but because they just can't afford to play the games they are interested in. So I'm not condemning Let's Play videos, but I do think that watching will always be less fun than playing, at least for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 12:40 am (UTC)(link)If you, or the OP, need to hit buttons in order to feel truly immersed in the game, that's great for you, but I don't think it makes you a better fan than someone who doesn't.
Re: I'm going to chime in here
And I really really hope I didn't imply that playing the game makes me a better fan. I just meant that personally I find playing the game to be a more fulfilling experience than watching LPs, and that I think I'm in the majority there. Reaching the end of a game and seeing the conclusion of a story is an accomplishment if you've played the game. Even if the story is completely linear, by reaching the end, you have to have at some point done something to reach that point. You have, in some way, caused the conclusion to happen. It's a feeling that may still be there in LPs, but I feel that it will inevitably be muted by the change in medium.
This is not me feeling like I'm better than people who watch LP's. It's me saying that I think (for most people! Not everyone.) that they might enjoy playing the game much better than just watching it.
