Re: OP here

Look I can't afford going to Disneyland either but I'm not gonna pretend I've been there by having watched a couple of videos either.

False equivalence ahoooy. Story and visuals are important parts of the games, unlike Disneyland. I've watched Lps of the games I have played myselft and sometimes I'd get impatient and watch the last part of the game in an LP instead of playing it. There's little difference to me. We're clearly playing games for different reasons and take enjoyment from different aspects to them. So kindly stuff it, you're not the One True Fan you believe yourself to be.

Story and visuals aren't an important part of Disneyland lol what? Hell the parks even use special scents to complete the experience.

Disney Park Fandom is the goofiest

GET IT? GOOFY?

I think they mean that watching an LP of a story-driven game is a bit different from watching someone's weird bootleg phone video of the Haunted Mansion.

but it's a little bit harder to emulate the thrill of being on a coaster, or the taste of the food, or any number of things that only happen when you're there in person. With an LP you can get the visuals, vocals, music, and story just as well as if you were playing.

Not everyone likes them - I prefer to play a game myself since I like feeling really immersed and not listening to other peoples' voices and figuring out puzzles (though they can be fun to watch for a game I've already played) - but who am I to say those who don't like them can't enjoy them?

Yeah, because THAT'S comparable. Grow up and find a better bad metaphor.

Let's explore your bad metaphor. So say someone goes to Disneyland, but doesn't go on any of the rides because they get motion sickness. They would have missed what some people consider a big part of Disneyland.

In comparison, because they didn't explore EVERYTHING at Disneyland, they didn't go.

Yeah, go find a better bad metaphor to support your stupidity.

Did you even read my original post? You think if someone gets seizures from holding a controller I would judge them for watching LP's instead??? Dude, I might have a strong opinion here but maybe don't strawman me into some idiot with a black & white view of the world.

"I'm not good at games" is the excuse I keep hearing and I'm sick of hearing it. Even if you're allergic to challenge most games come with an easy mode anyway.

I'm going to chime in here

While I think OP is perhaps being a little overly-aggressive here, I do agree with their basic points.

Like, me? I am SHIT at games. I die constantly if I play on anything but the easiest setting. It takes me months of nonstop play to reach a level that most people would consider decent with any given game. This is slowly improving as I get older, but I have the sinking suspicion that I will still be a worse-than-average player in 20 years.

But I still play the games, and I love them. I have friends who watch LPs and while I've tried to watch a couple, I feel like some essential magic is missing, even in very story-heavy games. Just watching someone play a game is nowhere near as satisfying and fulfilling as actually playing it, imo, and I personally think that most people who say otherwise just don't realize how much better it can be (MOST, I say, not all. I know people are different.). And I think it's because games are, by definition, interactive experiences, and there will always be a certain amount of impact lost when the interactive portion is removed, as it is in LPs.

That said, I understand that many people who watch LPs are not doing it because they are "bad at games" but because they just can't afford to play the games they are interested in. So I'm not condemning Let's Play videos, but I do think that watching will always be less fun than playing, at least for me.

I disagree. I've played many games and watched many Let's Plays. Sometimes I'd play one game in a series and watch a LP of the sequel. Sometimes I'd stop playing near the end and just watch a Let's Play, not because I was bad at it (games today are a lot easier than 10 years ago) but simply because the part that really interested me and kept me going was the story. Hitting buttons and killing enemies wasn't nearly as fun and it only delayed the part of the game that I was really looking forward to.

If you, or the OP, need to hit buttons in order to feel truly immersed in the game, that's great for you, but I don't think it makes you a better fan than someone who doesn't.

That's why I made it clear (I'd hoped) that I don't think what's true for me is automatically true for everyone. But I say that MOST people would agree with me because otherwise games wouldn't exist as they do now. If most gamers were perfectly content watching LP's then we would just have 20-hour movie-type things, not games as they exist today.

And I really really hope I didn't imply that playing the game makes me a better fan. I just meant that personally I find playing the game to be a more fulfilling experience than watching LPs, and that I think I'm in the majority there. Reaching the end of a game and seeing the conclusion of a story is an accomplishment if you've played the game. Even if the story is completely linear, by reaching the end, you have to have at some point done something to reach that point. You have, in some way, caused the conclusion to happen. It's a feeling that may still be there in LPs, but I feel that it will inevitably be muted by the change in medium.

This is not me feeling like I'm better than people who watch LP's. It's me saying that I think (for most people! Not everyone.) that they might enjoy playing the game much better than just watching it.

nayrt, but fwiw, I think you were clear and generally agree, even though I'm probably about 50-50 between playing and LP-ing a game. Though the difference between a playthrough and LP for me, besides availability (cost/game age/language barrier, etc.), is mostly whether it's actually fun to play vs. whether the story is engaging, and if the LPer is incisive or funny. Sometimes gameplay is bad or frustrating enough to break immersion on its own. And sometimes, it's fun to watch an LP after playing a game I found terrible for some commiseration.

You sound so condescending and, like, personally offended that people don't want to play games they don't feel like playing. Quit being a jerk. It's not an "excuse" because they aren't doing anything to you ffs
