Um..some of us watch Let's Plays because we don't really have the money to buy 60 dollars per fuckin' game. Steam makes it cheap, yes, but you do have to get a PC that can run games first. The latter can be pretty expensive and/or time consuming. Let's Play, which are free, are a little bit more economical. Especially if one is curious about the game and not sure if they want to drop some money on it.

Let's Plays are essentially an extension of "Go play a game at your friend's house." Expect for Friends, it's strangers. If you think there isn't anything wrong with people doing that with friends, then you shouldn't have a problem with let's plays.

You still get the canon. You still to experience the story. Why does it matter how you get there?

Also, way to throw in that misogynistic attitude at women at the end. It's not like there are guys who do the same thing.

Way too many game designers think we'll buy games that have great storylines but boring and repetitive gameplay. Screw that. I can go on Youtube for the storyline, and skip ahead when the endless monster-killing starts. (If the gameplay actually looks fun, I stop watching and buy the game.)

...Not a good comparison, tbh. If nothing else, Cliff Notes tends to leave out a *lot*, while LPs still let you experience the vast majority of the game's plot, if not all of it.

Also, how would you even know unless they tell you? [And yeah - price is a problem for some of us.]

Once upon a time I did pretty much this (I read reviews, youtube didn't even exist back then) because I was 16 and living on my own and couldn't afford a playstation or a decent PC that could run games.
I was also not a girl.

You know, sometimes people don't have enough time or money to actually buy and play video games, or maybe they just prefer watching Let's Play videos.

Or there's plenty of other reasons that won't be listed here. Why must there be some sort of validation? What gives you the right to judge?

Why only girls? Not all guys play videogames, either.

I have the same problem OP... I have a couple friends who are interested in a certain game but only watch the LP's even if I offer to borrow my copies to them. It's not even a hard game. It's a bummer because if they played it themselves we could all compare our own experiences and strategies in depth. :(

I used to have anxiety attacks* while we were supposed to be playing Number Munchers in elementary school, that's how bad at games I am. If I am expected to do something and I can't do it, I am way too stressed to have anything resembling a good time.

So no, if I'm looking for entertainment, I will not be playing the games.


*Probably not clinical anxiety attacks. I just froze up and started crying.

This attitude is why I haven't gotten around to checking out LPs. I keep thinking it might be fun to get to experience the plot lines and characters in some way without having to spend all that money I don't have on the games themselves, but then I'm reminded that there are people like OP. I know it's stupid and it doesn't really matter what they think but it still bothers me. Oh well, I have enough hobbies already.

Taking the game in your picture, Mirror's Edge - it looks gorgeous. I haven't watched a Let's Play online but I have spent a while watching my brother playing, and it's engaging to watch. I have played it, but I don't have an opposeable thumb on my left hand, so I can't hit LB and use the directional stick at the same time, which obviously hampers my ability to play. There are so many reasons why someone might prefer to watch someone else.

What's this talk about games being expensive? They're only expensive if you want to buy everything new & on release day, and why would you? I've hardly ever paid more than 15 bucks for a game. Steam sales exist. Indie games are never expensive. You can even pirate most titles if you're desperate.

I've never heard anyone complain about books or movies or music being "too expensive" even though those hobbies will cost you just as much as games.

Well, they certainly shouldn't be going around calling themselves "GAYMURZ!!!",
but there's nothing wrong with just watching a LP.

This is coming from someone who plays games, and plays some pretty difficult ones, at that.

It has absolutely zero impact on anything for any reason if someone wants to talk about the story or the art of Zelda without having actually played it.
They shouldn't get into discussions about the actual gameplay or difficulty aspects (for obvious reasons), but let them have at their observed aspects, because a game is more than just pressing a bunch of buttons.
It's a media experience. It's a video game.

The lowered opinion thing is bullshit, and so is the way OP specifically singled out girls, but I think if you've only watched an LP you're not getting the full experience.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with that, I've done it a couple times (specifically to work out what the fuck was going on in KH because I ain't buying every single god damn handheld to catch up before KH3), but it's not in any way a complete substitute for actually playing the game.

As long as people recognise that then I'm not fussed.

I don't know, I have a friend who hasn't really played anything since her childhood NES days but still proudly identifies as a gamer on her blogs

She just watches walkthroughs of every single thing, she's not poor or anything so it puzzles me why she wouldn't buy and play some of those games herself

There are some games that I physically cannot play because the camera gives me migraines and terrible motion sickness. This is the worst when it comes to FPS games (I'm actually not bad at Halo, I just can't play for more than 15 minutes at a time without wanting to go die in a dark closet somewhere), but certain third-person games with very active cameras (The Last of Us, Dead Space, and others) have the same effect.

Let's Plays don't completely solve this problem (video is video, regardless of whether it's in person or not), but they allow me to use mitigating strategies like only paying partial attention to the video feed during non-cutscene portions and super focusing on the dialogue, as well as often being broken into more manageable time chunks. For games I was interested in largely for the story instead of the gameplay, watching an LP is sometimes the only valid option. I'm not saying I possibly wouldn't have gotten more out of it through personally being the one to press buttons, but that's pretty much physically impossible for me sometimes, and I'm willing to take what I can get.

Meh, there's nothing wrong with LPs. I rarely watch them because of spoilers or because I'm too busy playing the game itself. But there's some fun ones out there.

I would like to see more of my friends try playing the games themselves, but if they don't want to, they don't want to. No big deal.

The irony of this secret for me is that I torrented Mirror's Edge, having been eager for years to play it, only to find that the actual gameplay actually makes me extremely nauseous. I can't play the game for more than twenty minutes at a time before I literally can't anymore. Kinda wished I had peeked at the LP first. =(
