What's this talk about games being expensive? They're only expensive if you want to buy everything new & on release day, and why would you? I've hardly ever paid more than 15 bucks for a game. Steam sales exist. Indie games are never expensive. You can even pirate most titles if you're desperate.

I've never heard anyone complain about books or movies or music being "too expensive" even though those hobbies will cost you just as much as games.

If I want to buy a game anytime in the first few years of it coming out, they're on average $50+ irrespective of console. So fuck you, games ARE expensive.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck you they aren't. Stop buying games off the shelf, problem solved.

Truth.

Of all the games I've bought, only one did I get brand new hot off the presses preordered. All other had been out long enough to get the bugs out and were a lot cheaper used.

The ones I bought dirt cheap second hand turned out to be my favorites.

Cool story bro-

I started with a second hand xbox and a couple of second hand games cheap. I thought I spent too much money. But when I got into the games, I spent so much time on them I didn't buy anything else for six months except for the basics- groceries, rent, never went out. I ended up saving up money in the bank enough to buy my first computer.

lmao so that's what you meant by "getting out of your comfort zone"?

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
If you think about it, video games tend to provide more hours of engagement compared to than say a trip to the movies too.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Very true. A movie, 12$ a shot these days?

One game- especially the ones I play- 60$ for literally thousands of hours of play. And I never get bored.

(of course it's understandably hard to scrape up 60$ at times, let alone having a half way decent machine)

Never waded into the depths of the piracy debates, I gather? Because people really, really do.

That's what I was thinking. There are a lot of things I'd buy more of if I had the money. Games (including but not limited to video games) top the list, but books and also merch...and I'd buy all the anime and music I've consumed for free or for a pittance. (I do make a point of trying to buy my favorite music even if I don't usually use iTunes to listen to it.)

Consoles are expensive, and there are so many more consoles per generation than there used to be. Even if you own one or two, you still miss out on playing over half of all the games that came out in the last few years.

And if you wait too long, the good games get more expensive again. It's a lot to keep track of.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-24 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Depend on the game. Some games are still pretty expansive, even after a while. And your also including things like consoles, which usually around $200 at least usually if you want it in good enough condition. And some people don't have good enough computers to play some of the bigger games.

It's really a matter of people not wanting to spend more on a hobby than their rent. And the fact that videogames usually take a lot more time than music, books, or movies.

Books, and my extensive reading habit, would be entirely too expensive for me to indulge in. Except that there are libraries. And I get all of my books for free. There is no way for me to do this with games. I have a couple of titles (which I got on sale), but A. I cannot really afford more and B. my computer is old and without great graphics, and I couldn't afford a really good one for hard core gaming. Books do not need hundreds of dollars as a base to be read before you even get your first one.

this, i usually pay $10-15 per game at most because i wait until things drop in price and buy used unless it's something i really, really want to own on the day it comes out.

games are way cheaper than movies, too. $10 for two hours of entertainment or $10 for 10+ hours? fuck yeah i'm gonna choose a game.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-25 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
That feel when the average books and movie tickets cost around 8 to 10 times cheaper than games here.

It sucks living in a third world, I guess. That's why I watch LPs. I am one of those people that feel watching a game isn't the same as playing it (even for JRPG titles), but beggar can't be chooser; I'll take what I get.

It depends on the country.

For example, dollar exchange in Argentina is 1 dollar = 8 pesos. Each PS3 game costs between 500 and 800 pesos. The console costs much more.
