Late comment here, but after reading a lot of this thread, I'm agreeing with OP.

Watching and enjoying the LPs is fine. They're a good source of information for those who play and good entertainment for those who rather not play. It's a good way to get a grasp of the story, and it's fine to be a fan of the story line.

Demanding "status" (is there status???) and posing as an expert on the game from only watching playthroughs makes you look stupid and petty.

"Mashing buttons doesn't make you a fan," "You get the complete story and feel of the game from LPs," "stupid mindless combat," "It's just stories, it's always the same with RPGs."

These comments are elitist. They are the mirror of twelve year old boys claiming to be hard core gamerz on public forums and you are no different from them.

When it comes down to debate, the one who has actually played the game is the one in the right. That's not elitism, that's the way it is. It's no different from any other hobby. You have to do it to fully know it. Why is gaming treated differently? You can call it unfair, you can't play the game, you can't afford it, so on, but why does everyone think they should earn gold stars when there aren't any gold stars in the first place? That's because you are so fucking focused on being elitist yourselves and you know better than these stupid gamers.

It's very insulting to those of us who want to get the most out of gaming and choose invest time and energy into it. There is so much to learn, especially with modding. You can call this elitist but no one is going to kiss your ass and hand hold you into making you feel better about some imaginary status that's so end all be all important to you.

If you can't discuss how you defeated the boss, how you got around a bug, how you solved that puzzle, a different way to play through a segment, your preferred style of magic or combat, what you like to do in your character's downtime, your gaming style, you're just not going to connect or relate. It's not going to happen.

Post these comments in some of the forums for gamers who work hard to get the most out of gaming. You won't be laughed at, I promise. You'll get a few angry comments, but you'll be mostly ignored, then booted out with a comment from the mods you would be sure to think is condescending or elitist.

It's generally accepted that to be a geek you gotta know your stuff. But here it's not?

If you want to be taken seriously, either don't claim you're an expert from watching LPs, or just play the games.

Exactly.

Just like with sport. Don't claim to be a fan and know all the rules if you've never taken part in any championships. How could you understand what's it like to be there on the field with the cameras on you and your teammates around you? You can't. Oh, you actually do play? I'm just going to ignore that, you're obviously a liar and don't know what you're saying.

Two things:

1. I don't know you or OP know what the word elitist means. Reading what you wrote, I'd wager the word you were looking for is "entitled". Elitist is what you're being.

2. Nobody said anything about "pretending to be an expert". It was about "calling yourself a fan if you haven't played the game yourself". That's not the same as calling yourself an expert. I also doubt that a lot of people who actually do play games could honestly called themselves "~experts~". And since you mention modding: Would you say that someone who has never used mods in a game (whether they didn't need/want to or are console gamers where modding isn't possible) is not a tru gamer either? You know, since they're lacking an important part of the general gaming experience?

I wonder if this is the OP replying to themselves. I find it hard to believe there are two people who completely misunderstand the word elitist in the exact same way.

Agreed wholeheartedly.
