It's not like reading the Cliff Notes and claiming to be a fan of the book. It's a hell of a lot more like claiming to be a fan of Shakespeare's plays when you've only ever read them, not watched them performed on stage. The story's built with a particular form of delivery in mind (watching the play, playing the game), but if that's not available or interesting to you, for whatever reason, you can get all the salient points via a secondary mechanism (reading the play, watching the LP), even if you lose some of the immersion.
