Ah we're had this discussion before. I get not having the money or the system or the time... but I don't get how you would even care about something if you can't play it. Like how did you even get into it if you don't play it? Did you get into it because you saw someone's shipping shit and decided you had to get into that? Seems like if you were that into it enough to write fic/do fanart you'd make a point of saving for/waiting for a sale and buying the game. I know I have.

To add: There's one games series I like so much I buy all the strat guys for. Not because I actually CARE about the guides but because I want to support what they do so I can get more.

I am bad enough at video games that one of my friends once tried to teach me how to play and, after literally an hour of me not being able to complete the tutorial, she gave up in frustration. Video games are not fun for me to play, they are frustrating.

I have seen trailers for games on TV and thought, "That looks like a lot of fun, and I'm really interested in the story!" If I'm interested enough in the story, I will watch an LP. It's a bit like watching a movie, for me, maybe with a friend who makes snarky comments about the movie while it's playing.

We must be related, because I have had the exact same experience my whole life, haha. Can't do the tutorial moves in most games, in others I never get past the 3rd level or so no matter how many months I put into the game or how easy the setting. It's just not fun at all. And yet gamers still tell me it's not that hard to learn to play, I must not be putting in enough work, blah blah.

Seriously I don't get why it's not okay for someone to be legitimately terrible at gaming, but still enjoy watching others play. It's fine for sports games to have spectators; why not this type, too?

This. There have been many times where I haven't had the money for a game or the proper console for it right then and have had to wait until I could save up, so I contented myself with watching LPs in the meantime. But did I go out and buy the game as soon as I could? Hell yes.

Hell, I'm still waiting to be able to play Amnesia and a whole bunch of other games because my computer is too old to be able to run them properly and I don't have the spare funds for a new computer right now. I have every intention of buying them and playing them for myself once I have the ability to, and I would never fault someone for turning to LPs in a situation like that or one where they get motion sick or whatever from the controls.

What I don't understand are the people who have the ability to play games and then never even try playing it. My sister is terrible with the controls in the original Silent Hill games but she still spent a couple of hours giving it a good shot before she handed the controller over to me so that I could finish it while she watched. At least give it a try.

I can think of one way. Are you familiar with the Kingdom Hearts franchise? The first game came out on the PS2. Since then, there have been games on several other franchises, including the DS/3DS, PSP, and PS3. It's easy to imagine gamers who got invested in the characters and plot with the first game, but then didn't have the money to buy several other consoles/platforms to keep up with the story, and so turned to LPs.
