Oh for fuck's sake.
1. Writing fanfiction and original fiction aren't mutually exclusive. A few professionals have gotten started writing fanfic. That doesn't even touch on all the original Star Trek and Star Wars novels out there.
2. Not everyone who writes is good at everything that would go into an original novel. You might be really good at dialog but shit at worldbuilding.
3. Sometimes people just want to have fun. What's wrong with that?
EXAMPLE
Other people might be technical writers, or run a blog, or involved in journalism. They might be teachers. Or maybe they work retail! Are we somehow squandering our talents writing silly stuff on the side because we aren't churning out lots of original fiction? Original fiction is hard work; it isn't sitting blissfully at a cafe with a coffee and a cigarette letting the words flow. It's definitely worthwhile, but writing isn't the break that goofy fanfiction is. This world is full of people who need a break. I'm glad they're doing it with their creativity rather than vegging out in front of the TV.
