EXAMPLE

I'm working on a fanfic. My job right now is working on my dissertation, and my career is going to involve writing a couple books and a bunch of articles. My work gets me praise at history conventions. I just happen to write nonfiction.

Other people might be technical writers, or run a blog, or involved in journalism. They might be teachers. Or maybe they work retail! Are we somehow squandering our talents writing silly stuff on the side because we aren't churning out lots of original fiction? Original fiction is hard work; it isn't sitting blissfully at a cafe with a coffee and a cigarette letting the words flow. It's definitely worthwhile, but writing isn't the break that goofy fanfiction is. This world is full of people who need a break. I'm glad they're doing it with their creativity rather than vegging out in front of the TV.

Your last point is a good one. These fanfic writers might be sitting around doing nothing, but instead are doing something they enjoy while contributing to others' enjoyment as well.

You say much of what I wish to say on the matter.
