This is exactly why I have no interest in games like Mass Effect or Dragon Age. The games themselves look interesting and fun as hell, but I HATE blank-slate protagonist characters. I don't want to project onto some blank template, I want to play as a fully-realized character with a defined personality.

Indie games, bro. Star Stealing Prince has a better plot than most novels.

Mass Effect at least actually has pretty defined characters compared to the PCs of other games like, say, Skyrim.

DA2 does, too, though Origins is pretty blank slate.

Really when I think of blank slate protagonists I think of things like Half Life, Portal, and Call of Duty where you know almost nothing at all about your character. Dragon Age is sort of like that in that who your character is is completely up to you, but the possibilities are still all in the game. I guess it and ME could be considered to have less defined characters compared to things like Grand Theft Auto, but I'm still having trouble seeing them as totally blank slates.

You don't have to project, silly. It's a role-playing game for a reason. You choose what sort of character you feel like playing (good, evil, neutral, flirty, crazy, brave, cowardly, gay, straight, etc.) and then you play through the game and choices with that character in mind!
