Can someone explain to me where's the fun in watching playthroughs? I love playing videogames, but I don't see how watching other people play can be entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
i'm guessing cause they find it fun and get enjoyment out of watching.

not a big deal

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-11-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I never got it either. Don't get me wrong; if people wanna watch those that's cool! I have nothing against them, per se -- I just don't see the appeal myself.

Watching someone in RL, however, is another story... Like my mom, who physically jerks the controller to the side when she wants Mario to jump further XDb

You've obviously never watched a good playthrough. Or are playthroughs different than Let's Plays? Let's Plays are the ones where the person playing the game comments and reacts to the game and makes jokes to the viewer while they're playing, right? If Playthroughs don't do that, then I can see your point.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
If the people who are playing through it are entertaining on their own, I guess.

TBH I almost exclusively watch LPs of really awful games where the whole point is listening to them bag on the game. Either that or SSLPs of grand strategy games where it's interesting to see people invent a nrrative. But then again I don't really like most games that much, so IDK.

I like watching the story. I will never play Silent Hill myself, but I do enjoy the story. Also, for some Let's Players I really enjoy their voice, so I just use it as background noise if I have seen it already.

I don't really see how it is any different from watching a movie? I am watching a story and having someone occasionally comment on it. So like watching a movie with a friend.

it's about the reactions of the person playing, i suppose

i really enjoy Cry's let's plays, for example, because he really gets into the role of the playing characters and the story

As a rule I don't like watching other people play, however I accidentally watched someone's entire LP of Tokyo Jungle and it was pretty enjoyable. So I can see why some people like LP's.

oh and i watched a livestream of Amnesia once. That was lots of fun, everyone 'yelling' at the player on what to do.

It was just fun. No lightbulb moment on why, it was just enjoyable.

I think it has to do with the personalities of the people playing. I don't personally watch LPers -- most of them aren't funny to me and I wish Pewdiepie would eat bees, but there's a few channels out there that are straight playthroughs with no commentary. Came in handy when I deleted my GTA Liberty City Stories save by accident with 10 missions left.

For me, I play lots of video games. I can't play horror games because I get too scared and nope out of the place (I played exactly five minutes of Amnesia before the atmosphere made me quit). But watching something like a Let's Play lets me see part of the game without having to experience that amount of fear.

I can only enjoy a playthrough/LP if it's at least an okay player and it's a game I've already played. Then I get to see how they do things differently from me, and I can pick up alternate strategies.

You're watching the wrong people then. People watch those dudes - okay Pewdiepie, idk the others - because they're so over the top.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I generally hate that hysterical screaming throughout the whole videos that for some reason is so very popular with a lot of the "bigger" Let's Players....

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I follow AdamSpencer87 who doesn't have a facecam or commentary and he's played a lot of games although long series ones, not one shot indie horrors.

There are plenty of playthroughs without commentary on youtube and wouldn't that be hella boring if someone with commentary just didn't react to what happens in the game at all?
Are you numbed by all the scary stuff that you don't remember what it feels like to actually get scared? Because even though sometimes the reactions pull me away from the scare, it makes me relate or even make the creepiness amplified... and there wouldn't be a reason for a commentarified game in the first place if the gamer was quiet.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a little thing called immersion which will never be fully captured on an LP. That's because you feel like you are right there.

I stopped playing a couple of video games because they were so damned scary and creepy, but I can watch LPs of them all day long.

If the reactions seem honest then I love them. I've only watched a handful of horror LP's (And usually not even of the whole game because I eventually get bored) but they're my favorite because I don't play a lot of horror games, or even particularly want to, so I get the story, at least.

I agree that LP's are better when the person doesn't talk over the dialogue, though. Unless you've already played the game and want commentary. (Not often do I go for that, but there are cases where I loved a certain scene or whatever and wanted to see what others thought of it.)

There are some good ones for the Shalebridge Cradle level of Thief 3 that seem authentic enough, but yeah, you can only take so much shrieking.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
You might like Conan O'Brien's recent video "review" of PC horror games? It's really a 9-minute comedy segment (and Conan is very much not a gamer, playing with the help of a very avid one), but he's barely spooked until the last game.

Eyeah, no, I watch horror game LPs so I can enjoy a bunch of grown men screaming bloody murder. Of course, being that I'm more easily frightened than a squirrel on a caffeine kick, it's kind of cathartic for me to see other pansies in action.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't tend to watch LPs unless it's a genre of game that frustrate the fuck out of me to play- case in point, older ROM games like King's Quest. Paw's LPs of those are among my favorite things because they're so silly. I tried playing the games myself, but they utterly trumped me.

I'd recommend Helloween4545. He only does horror games but he takes it in stride most of the time, making the few times when he DOES get scared/surprised memorable ("Goddamned NINJAS!"). He's also fantastically funny; he's one of the only LPers to actually make me cry with laughter.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Another anon dropping in with a recommendation. I've been watching a lot of supergreatfriend's videos lately. They've played a few horror games and are really chill, it's nice!
