Can someone explain to me where's the fun in watching playthroughs? I love playing videogames, but I don't see how watching other people play can be entertaining.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
i'm guessing cause they find it fun and get enjoyment out of watching.

not a big deal

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-11-27 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I never got it either. Don't get me wrong; if people wanna watch those that's cool! I have nothing against them, per se -- I just don't see the appeal myself.

Watching someone in RL, however, is another story... Like my mom, who physically jerks the controller to the side when she wants Mario to jump further XDb

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Well. I've been playing games for years, and I still can't get it into my head that, no, pressing the button harder won't do more damage to the monster, make you go faster or - as you said - jump higher. 'OTL

Ugh, yes, this.

It really isn't. There's nothing wrong with it, but don't claim you did something when you just watched someone else do it. That's like watching someone... I dunno, fix a bathtub then taking credit for it.

Shush with your logic.

Oh goodness. Haha, do you think the two OPs should hang out and banter? Might be fun.

You've obviously never watched a good playthrough. Or are playthroughs different than Let's Plays? Let's Plays are the ones where the person playing the game comments and reacts to the game and makes jokes to the viewer while they're playing, right? If Playthroughs don't do that, then I can see your point.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
If the people who are playing through it are entertaining on their own, I guess.

TBH I almost exclusively watch LPs of really awful games where the whole point is listening to them bag on the game. Either that or SSLPs of grand strategy games where it's interesting to see people invent a nrrative. But then again I don't really like most games that much, so IDK.

It's the really long thread with the really angry people.

I like watching the story. I will never play Silent Hill myself, but I do enjoy the story. Also, for some Let's Players I really enjoy their voice, so I just use it as background noise if I have seen it already.

I don't really see how it is any different from watching a movie? I am watching a story and having someone occasionally comment on it. So like watching a movie with a friend.

it's about the reactions of the person playing, i suppose

i really enjoy Cry's let's plays, for example, because he really gets into the role of the playing characters and the story

As a rule I don't like watching other people play, however I accidentally watched someone's entire LP of Tokyo Jungle and it was pretty enjoyable. So I can see why some people like LP's.

oh and i watched a livestream of Amnesia once. That was lots of fun, everyone 'yelling' at the player on what to do.

It was just fun. No lightbulb moment on why, it was just enjoyable.

How do you accidentally watch and entire LP of a game?

I think it has to do with the personalities of the people playing. I don't personally watch LPers -- most of them aren't funny to me and I wish Pewdiepie would eat bees, but there's a few channels out there that are straight playthroughs with no commentary. Came in handy when I deleted my GTA Liberty City Stories save by accident with 10 missions left.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
why would you wish such an unkind thing unto bees though

What's wrong with Pewdiepie? his stuff kinda got repetitive after 10000 videos but he's funny and light-hearted about it, and seems well-meaning, so..

For me, I play lots of video games. I can't play horror games because I get too scared and nope out of the place (I played exactly five minutes of Amnesia before the atmosphere made me quit). But watching something like a Let's Play lets me see part of the game without having to experience that amount of fear.

Maybe I'm just desensitized, but I noped out of Amnesia because it's a horrible game. I'm not easily scared anymore.

I can only enjoy a playthrough/LP if it's at least an okay player and it's a game I've already played. Then I get to see how they do things differently from me, and I can pick up alternate strategies.

Because the PEOPLE playing are entertaining. If they're funny, witty, and make good remarks on the game, it just makes it so much more enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
As a non-gamer who gave up in frustration on the only game I've ever attempted, I'd say that a playthrough might be fun for someone who's terrible at gaming but who wants to see the content of the game in question.

Mine was an extreme case of incompetence: I couldn't figure out how to grasp objects, which meant all I could do was wander the initial hallway, fruitlessly mashing random keys. Nothing even came to attack me! I had nobody to ask, and the manual assumed some basic familiarity with gaming that I didn't have, as did the few online hints I could find at the time. (The person who gave me the game did so because she couldn't figure out how to play it either.)

Watching a playthrough would have to be more fun than that!
