Re: I love...
It's spitting into a crowd of people vs. spitting into a spittoon, Anonypants.
Re: I love...
(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:16 am (UTC)(link)For example. Let's say I don't like blue eyes. I would never wear blue contacts. I couldn't bring myself to be in a relationship with anyone with blue eyes. Those are my choices.
It doesn't give me the right to say blue-eyed people should wear dark contacts, or that they disgust me, because they clearly don't care about their appearance.
Re: I love...
Long underarm hair is.
You can bet your sweet ass that if a large percentage of people with blue eyes also had the potential to give you genital warts, and this was a common and well-known function of blue eyes, people wouldn't think that blue eyes were very hot either.
I'm not excusing body shaming here, I just think your example is bogus and unrelated to the actual associations playing out here.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)Re: I love...
Long underarm hair is associated with men -> men tend to have more testosterone -> testosterone causes men to smell and sweat more (in general) -> long underarm hair is smelly and sweaty.
Same goes for associating long underarm hair with people who don't tend to other socially prescriptive personal hygiene regimens, some of which are useful, some of which are just there to encourage you to buy more beauty products. People don't think about the usefulness, they just think about the fact that people who don't groom tend to smell, and thus another association is born.
Re: I love...
(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 11:45 am (UTC)(link)Your basic assumption is faulty. It really depends on what country you're in/from and even, sometimes, what part of what country.
All you can really say is that you or possibly your region/country make those associations.
Re: I love...
(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)Oh come on, how is not shaving your pits going to give people genital warts? And it's not like shaving stops sweat or unpleasant smells or gets rid of unchecked bacterial colonies. That all has to do with washing, not with body hair.
You're being as ridiculous as the other anon.
Re: I love...
I meant that if blue eyes were associated with stuff most people consider "gross" (ex. warts), then you'd find a whole lot of people thinking blue eyes are gross.
Same as the phenomenon where people refuse to drink from a glass with a dead fly in it, even if they've been informed that the fly has been completely sanitized and the drink is totally safe. Transference theory.

Re: I love...
(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:38 am (UTC)(link)do people with long hair on their heads gross you out too? as we all know, the scalp sweats and produces oil. someone with hair isn't any "grosser" than someone without it as long as they bathe thoroughly and regularly.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)Re: I love...
Unless, in this universe, people found genital warts to be an attractive feature. Maybe having genital warts meant you were of a higher social standing.
You can't just make up some weird ass example that has no basis in reality to "prove" your point.
Bacteria grows on your underarms whether or not hair is present. People with and without hair can and do keep their natural odors in "check" with soap and deodorant.
Re: I love...
I also realize a lot of the associations around underarm hair aren't true, but that doesn't stop people from believing them.
tbh, I like hair. I just don't think someone who doesn't is automatically shaming other people for having that preference.
Re: I love...
People think less of you are a women who doesn't shave herself smooth. People think less of you if you're a man with back hair who doesn't shave. (Men have a little more leeway, but back hair tends to be universally thought of gross.)
Re: I love...
I see how you could object to the use of the word gross as a label, but it didn't seem to me as if it was being used that way here.
