I never lock my door when I am at home, I can't think of anyone I know who does that. With the exception of people who have front doors that lock automatically.

Most people around me do lock the doors before going to sleep, I on the other hand, have the philosophy: If you want to break into my house while I am in it, you will find a way no matter what so let's just save the door from the damage it will get...

When I lived with two friends in a biggers town we barely locked the doors when we left, because sometimes we were not sure who was at home or not, and no point in locking the door if someone is at home. We locked it if all of us went away for the weekend, but other than that, burglars can get in even if the door is locked.

Like I said above, I grew up in a city where if you didn't lock your door, even when people are home, there was always the chance someone could walk right in and do you harm. No thanks.

I am not saying you are wrong for locking your door, just sayin I am not used to having to lock my door. Then again I live in a seriously safe city in a quite safe country so who am I to judge?

" If you want to break into my house while I am in it, you will find a way no matter what so let's just save the door from the damage it will get... "

But most burglars don't operate the way you suggest. They don't choose one house and break into it NO MATTER WHAT STANDS IN THEIR WAY. They look for easy targets that they can enter and leave with the least amount of trouble. That would be the house with the unlocked door or a door with a shitty lock.

Also, the idea behind locks isn't to 100% foolproof prevention, it's to slow people down so that they either don't want to bother or they don't suceed in breaking it.

Most burglars don't break into houses with people in 'em. At least not where I live they don't...

I am not scared of burglars, seriously I can't think of anyone being killed or seriously hurt by a burglar in my country in ages. And if it happens they have to find my house first, and not go to the ground floor flat but up the stairs to mine, and if they have gotten that far and I am at home they can have whatever the fuck they want, it isn't like they will steal anything that can't be replaced quite easily.

Most burglaries* (60%) happens during the day when people are at work in empty houses, and apparently 37 out of 100.000 people get burglared, so I fancy my chances with my unlocked door while I am at home yeah.

*I assume it is a pretty universal thing, but I dunno so for clarity: In Norway

I'd also be worried about sexual assault. Unlocked door with a person inside is ideal for a rapist. Locking the door is easy, it takes less than two seconds. I prefer not taking my chances with any criminals who want to take my stuff and/or hurt me in the process.
