I live in an NYC apartment. There's usually a minimum of two locks and a door chain between me and the outside world at all times of the day. However, I did visit an upper-middle-class complex downtown where residents left their doors unlocked and even open. But they had security guards and a double-locked entrance to keep them comfortable.
