Not locking the front door when characters get home.

Wait. Wait. What?

People in your area routinely lock their doors when they're in the house, awake, and not hiding from somebody?

My front door is always locked. I do not want anyone - family, friend, or stranger - just walking in.

Yeah, see, while I can understand that, where I'm getting confused is the idea that this is likely to happen if the front door isn't locked.

Outside of my grandmother's open door policy (wherein any of her kids, grandkids, or siblings who happen to be in town can just walk in), the idea that somebody might simply walk into a house or apartment other than their own is just completely alien to me.

Are you completely unfamiliar with crime? Home invasion? Burglary? Trespassing?

Some people live in places where you don't need to lock you door because those things are very unlikely to happen. Just because something is an "alien" concept doesn't mean they are stupid.

Just because someone lives in a place where they don't experience crime doesn't mean no one experiences crime, and if the concept is that alien to them (never watched the news I assume?), well...

Do they also live in a place where there are no crime stories either on the news, the internet, books, TV or movies? I don't live in a place where people die from earthquakes, but people would probably think I'm a little dumb if I went "Wait, do people actually die from earthquakes?"

I'm perfectly familiar with crime.

Including actual knowledge of what kinds of crimes are committed in what kinds of situations, and I have first-hand experience at how lousy the standard front door is for keeping out somebody who's determined to get in.

Locking your door when you're home for fear of crime is like always carrying an umbrella for fear of a random meteor strike - it's inadequate protection against something that's not particularly likely in the first place.

Re: It's the little things.....

(Anonymous) 2013-11-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a very good analogy. Locking your door does deter crime. Maybe not the kind of crime where an axe murderer is determined to chop you into pieces to feed you to the hogs, but it's certainly very useful against burglary and home invasion where people are looking for easy targets such as homes with unlocked front doors.

As for "not particularly likely in the first place"... you do realize that not everyone lives in a low crime area, right?

People are mostly looking for homes/cars that are unoccupied at the time. Both times my house was broken into, the door was locked and the door was kicked in. The same with everyone I know. My brother stopped locking his car because he was tired of replacing the window broken by people looking for something to steal.

If someone wants in a locked place, they'll find a way in. It's more likely that you being there will deter someone more than locking your door will.

it's certainly very useful against burglary and home invasion where people are looking for easy targets such as homes with unlocked front doors.

Unlocked front doors - AND NOBODY AWAKE INSIDE. The minute there is somebody who can defend the property inside, it stops being an easy target. This is why locking your door is a good idea when you're out, or when you're asleep.

And, no, not everybody lives in a low crime area.

But that's not even vaguely relevant to what I'm saying.

Not all crimes are equally likely - crimes committed against occupied houses or the people within, by people not legitimately in the house are vanishingly rare.

By far, the crimes a person is most likely to be a victim of in their own home are domestic abuse, and acquaintance rape - ie, they're going to be victimized by the people they live with, or let in themselves.

Even in high crime areas.

ESPECIALLY in the areas with the highest crime rates in North America, the Canadian territories. Isolated Northern settlements with sky-high alcoholism rates, and resulting high rates of domestic abuse. (Yes, not urban areas. Surprise, surprise.)

My mom-in-law seemed to think she could at any time, which i discouraged handily. Plus - this sounds a little paranoid, or maybe just overly cynical -but people are nuts. I don't trust 'em and i don't like the idea that my home is unsecured, even if i'm in it.

I don't even live in a 'high crime' area, i'm just...used to locking my door.

Anybody could just barge in if you left it unlocked and we definitely do not want that.

Hah, I thought the same thing. I don't even think I have a key to my house, we never lock the doors.

Yep. As recently as twenty years ago, they didn't. But now it seems absolutely crazy not to.

Um, yeah? I grew up in a city. If you don't lock your door, someone is going to walk in and rape/rob/kill you. To me it's completely foreign *not* to lock the door even when you're home. Unless you live way out in the country or something.

Security mostly. Also home insurance is void if I leave doors unlocked and a theft happens, even if I am home.

Excluding nice days I want an airflow on, or if I'm doing yardwork or cleaning.

I live in an NYC apartment. There's usually a minimum of two locks and a door chain between me and the outside world at all times of the day. However, I did visit an upper-middle-class complex downtown where residents left their doors unlocked and even open. But they had security guards and a double-locked entrance to keep them comfortable.
