(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 02:09 am (UTC)(link)Which, and let those stones fall on me, wasn't rape: There's a degree of magical coercion that really can't be translated to our own sense of morality. Did Willow rape Tara with the memory erasing spells? Did Regina rape Graham by whispering "do me" into his heart? It's a pointless moral question that will never be applicable on a real life situation, and I can't help but think it trivializes the whole deal.
Dub-Con is the best place to shove those questionable things that are really not cool, but you can't actually call rape, specially the definition of it based on our present context.
FTL is mostly a medieval society, can we justifiable apply our morals? It just feels ridiculous that people get so hung up on the rape thing when whe know she is a MURDERER (human life is another thing that ain't no thang on FTL)
"Rape is Rape" is not really true, sorry. actions and reactions are subservient to their contexts. You could sell human beings, and it was normal on the past, and that shit is unjustifiable from our present perspective now. Take Regina, a monarch with the lives of her subjects at her disposal, and Graham's fate is almost a kindness.
Regina is a product of her context, rape doesn't mean the same on all points of history, is not an absolute but a relative specific to a point in time. Good news is that we are evolving, and things do get progressively better.
Unless we get colonized by sex crazed aliens that will commodify us as sex slaves across the universe.
Point is, Regina fans are not "excusing rape" is just that even crazy Regina stans have more awareness of context that you, and I say this like someone that loathes Regina, not by the "rape", but for the COUNTLESS LIVES SHE HAS TAKEN.
And if people forgive mass murderers on their fiction (like always)a little rape thrown in the middle is a spec of evil at best.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 02:22 am (UTC)(link)Actually yes. Especially since his refusal to go into her bedchambers before she ripped out his heart absolutely should be seen as his refusal to sleep with her. Regina had no consent from him before or after she ripped out his heart, ergo, your damn right it's rape. No means no, whether its a man refusing or a woman.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)This is exactly the kind of myopia I'm talking about.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-30 03:09 am (UTC)(link)There's a reason why I DON'T ship Spike with Buffy and that has everything to do with the infamous bathroom scene. He may not have 'had his soul' but he was fully aware that he was about to rape Buffy and that's more than enough for me to turn me off the relationship permanently, everything in S7 and beyond.

Yes. And of course the magic will never be applicable, the point is the lack of consent.
