How the fuck is finding "blond hair, blue eyes" attractive "problematic"?

Are you shitting me, or do you actually believe Hitler has the ability to transform everyone who just so happens to look like his preferred race into an appearance that should be shunned?

I think it would be "problematic" if you thought John Barrowman looked good in that get up, because you think blonde hair and blue eyes are superior features, and all other features are inferior. Or something like that.
Probably not problematic if you just think he looks good dressed like that/in uniform. I'd say he looks good there too, and I'm not even a fan of him

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Finding the "Aryan ideal" look attractive isn't any more problematic than liking any other physical features. And there was probably a reason they had that look as an ideal, y'know?

Being attracted to Nazis/Nazi uniforms is different, but I guess as long as you don't actually support Nazism, whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Totally off-topic, but I once worked with an English producer on this game show, who had apparently known Barrowman quite well in the past. Once the guy was a little in his cup, he started insinuating that Mr. B had a thing for... putting liquid up your ass, and now that's ALL I can think of when I see his face.

Also can't believe this anonymous comment is the first time I've ever told that story.

Keep looking for problematic things.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-12-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
He looks fucking hot with blond hair and blue eyes. So what? Finding blondes attractive is problematic now? Is it the uniform?

+1

Considering there are multiple layers of both "fictional" and "ridiculous" here, I wouldn't worry about it. This is very far removed from any actual Nazis.

i don't think this makes you a bad person since he is not an actual nazi as far as i know.

the only thing i've seen john barrowman in is shark attack 3: megalodon. this was enough for me to know that he is extremely cool.

Wow. I didn't even recognize him with the blond hair! I find him much more attractive with it, tbh. He looks less annoying somehow.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
It does seems sort of wrong to cast somebody so hot as a Nazi. -_- But it's basically close to impossible NOT to find him attractive so I wouldn't worry about it! :-)

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-12-03 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else note that it's another example of the show trolling the audience to put an out gay man into the lead stormtrooper role?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
2 things:

On account of being Jewish, Nazi uniforms are an immediate turn-off for me, although I understand the appeal for others, since I'm normally big on well-tailored uniforms. So that's one strike against it for me, personally.

Also, John Barrowman with blond hair looks creepily like my uncle's husband, and it's really weirding me out.

The Producers was awesome and I'm pretty sure anyone would be attracted to him right there, what with the stylish uniform.

Why do you think the Nazis had attractive uniforms? Hitler planned for it all along.

I kinda get the sense that the actual Nazis wouldn't get beyond John Barrowman (in his role in The Producers or him in general - what with the gay activism stuff)

Sooo... not seeing anything "problematic" about finding him attractive.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
The whole idea of The Producers is that Springtime for Hitler is a ridiculous, horrible idea for a show. Casting John Barrowman as a Nazi just makes it funnier. It's not glorifying Nazism in any way. So no, I don't think there's any kind of angle from which this is a bad opinion to have.

Plus, yes, he looks really hot.

Someone finds the traits tall, blue eyes, blond hair, and a good build attractive? Stop the presses.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
To most people alive today (and definitely most people involved in fandom) Hitler is nothing but a few pages in a history book, an online Wiki entry or a Grimm villain. There's no realness to him anymore so he's much like so many of our fandom villains who have enthusiastic followings. I don't think many would actually say they'd appreciate him as their countries leader.

I haven't seen "The Producers", and even I know that "Springtime for Hitler" is a parody.

1- Nothing wrong with the blond-and-blue-eyed combo, unless you DO think the "Aryan Ideal" is the ZOMG MOST PERFECT human aesthetic in the world and everyone else can GTFO. (Besides, it's Barrowman. That guy could wear a potato sack and look good).

2- The Nazi uniform is indeed an instant turn-off for me, and for a lot of people (I feel physically repulsed by the insignia), but it was... actually designed to convey atractiveness, in a sleek and powerful package. They comissioned Hugo Boss to make them and all. So people, specially men, /do look good wearing it/, that's the point. It's the /meaning/ of that uniform what's disturbing. Unless you're supporting the meaning of it, there's no harm in looking, I think. Specially if it's a parody.

So chill, OP.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-03 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
i seriously don't understand why everyone freaks out about blackface but nobody thinks there's a problem with finding nazi uniforms hot.

do you all seriously not understand what those uniforms directly stand for? or is it because most americans lack the ability to see beyond their own american views?

this whole argument of "they were made by boss, it's ok to think they're sexy" is so disgusting. so if a man in a tailored sexy uniform gives the order to put millions of innocent people to death it's ok to think "ah well, at least the uniform is hot". ok, good to know.

Not unless you're finding him attractive because he's a Nazi. Which would be difficult in that movie.
