Drawing Resources

[personal profile] sarillia 2013-12-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've been wanting to get better at drawing for a while but I'm not sure where to begin. I know "practice, practice, practice" but I want to make sure I'm not forming bad habits. Does anyone have some good resources for learning to draw?

Yeah, practicing is good, but make sure you have a directed focus. It's really easy to get into a slump of just drawing the same thing over and over again. So a good thing to do is dedicate a month to drawing one particular thing (like say people, landscapes, perspective, color, proportions, and so on) to improve.

Getting into the habit of drawing daily really helps, even if it's only for 15 minutes.

If you have the chance to, try live sketching too! It doesn't have to be nude models or anything (those do help though), but just stuff you can have in front you so you can see how they work in a 3D space. And don't be afraid to use references either! They're super helpful!

Thanks. Doing it consistently will probably be a challenge. I have a bad habit of dropping things when they get too frustrating. I'm still getting comfortable with the drop spindle I got a couple years ago because I can only use it for a few minutes at a time.

I took a drawing class at a local place (actually it was in the back of an art supply store) which was amazingly helpful and quite affordable.

Other than that, the best resource I can say is to draw from life rather than from other drawings or photos. Once you get used to drawing what you actually see instead of what you assume (aka trees aren't triagles or circles, there aren't hard lines in the human face, etc) that's most of the bad habits gone right there. :D

Thanks for the tip. I'd love to take a drawing class but I don't think there are any available to me at the moment. I can try drawing some of the things around me though.

Seek out art critique forums. They usually have some linked resources for perspective and anatomy exercises, and if you have a tablet/way to put your art online they'll be the first to tell you exactly what you've done wrong and even redline it for you so you can fix it in the future.

Oddly enough, 4chan has a pretty good board for it... though there are others.

I'll look into those. I don't know if I'm brave enough to actually show my sad beginner attempts to other people but I'll remember that.

For landscape drawing, you might like Chip Sullivan's Drawing the Landscape. And most of my drawing instructors relied heavily on exercises from Kimon Nicolaides' The Natural Way to Draw, but tbh, it is a demanding program that I suspect isn't for everybody.

Good luck!

I do like the idea of landscape drawing. I'll look into those. Thanks.
