YES! What a fantastic book.

I think it does all right reputation-wise - mostly because essentially every person who reads it loves it and recommends it endlessly - but it definitely isn't as well known as it should be (like a lot of fantasy books that I love).

I see your plan OP! Trying to drum up interest with this secret.

If I can find a digital copy maybe I'll read it.

Alright, you win this one, OP! I'll put it in my to-buy list and see if I can get it.

Completely agree! I've found the second one, too, and enjoyed it just as much. I dread finding the third because it means when I finish that one, there will be no more wonderful adventures of Master Li and Number Ten Ox. Ever.

Secret 1 - Bridge of Birds (fantasy book)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cover of the book "Bridge of Birds" by Barry Hughart. It has the subtitle "A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was". It shows the painting of a woman in salmon pink Chinese-style robes dancing? while birds fly around her and towards a mountain in the distance. It is in the style of those really old Chinese paintings with minimal lines.]

I think this is one of the best books I've ever read. The ending is definitely in my top three. This is the type of book that keeps me hunting despite the dreck that's 99% of fantasy. But no one else seems to have heard of it.

The bit about the proper way to cook porcupines leaves me in tears every time...

I don't think there's ever been a character catchphrase more illuminating than "I have a slight flaw in my character." It reveals what sort of person Li is (a casual murderer who's only technically a good guy), what sort of person he wants people to think he is (a font of wisdom with one tiny little crack), and how he accomplishes it (through the vague language of the seer, and the respect accorded to an honored elder.)

tears?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Is that tears from laughter or from sadness? A lot depends on this answer...

Yes.

If your intention was to rec it to people, you've certainly succeeded, anon. I'll put it on my to-buy list too!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I was lucky enough to get a set of all three in one book years ago as a gift. They're amazing books.

My one criticism of them is that he uses a lot of the same plot elements in each one. So by the time I got to the third it took away a lot of the mystery, which is sad, at least for me. But they're still fantastically written, and I'd rec them to anyone.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I ADORE this book! I was just thinking of how awful it is that nobody else has heard of it! Thank you, secret maker! :DDD

Well, it looks like you're not quite alone, after all, secret maker. I do love Hughart's work too.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I'll try to find it at the library. Thanks for the recommendation, OP!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I really want to read it, but I can't find it used or in the library locally. One day, though.
