Of course she was annoying and whiny, she was a young adult. Not you OP, but I hate when people are like, "Why isn't she like old movie Mystique?????" Because damn it, one is much older. :|

To be fair, there were some things the character did that I thought were so stupid!

Agreed. Younger Mystique is going to act young. She isn't necessarily gonna be all cool and badass yet.

To me it was more the stuff the character was going through than JL's performance. She was trying to find where she belonged and who her (chosen) family was. That involves being somewhat whiny and annoying.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
You are mistaken. Mystique was born a cool collected blue badass. Age matters not to Mystique.

I thought that was the point of her character?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-05 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, this entire movie is a prequel, so I would expect all the characters to be a little immature compared to their older counterparts...? I thought that was part of the appeal of a "before they were famous" movie!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
This, and she was probably directed like that because of this. People only ever notice about actors in a movie unless the director is famous, but I don't understand why people think everything is hinged on the actors alone.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I thought she was fine but she could've been a little better written

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, but that entire movie was shit and JL was probably doing the best she could with the material.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
True. It was a pretty terrible movie, in hindsight. I mainly enjoyed McAvoy & Fassbender.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
that's really the only reason TO enjoy that movie, because they were stellar.

A terrible movie with bizarrely good acting, is what it was.

This was the first movie I saw Jennifer Lawrence in and I loved her as Mystique. I totally bought her performance as someone who was different but wanted to be like everyone else and eventually accepting who she was. I especially remember being in the movie theater and thinking "thank God, they cast someone who is not "hollywood skinny" and still dressed her like they thought she was hot. Which she was.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Are you fucking kidding me? Not Hollywood skinny? She was a fucking beanpole! In what world is she NOT borderline anorexic? Choke on human shit, you fucking asshole.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
trying too hard but I'll bite

She has actually gotten a lot of hate for being """fat""" and I think she's handled it quite well

Secret 9 - X-Men: First Class, Mystique, Jennifer Lawrence

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the actress Jennifer Lawrence as herself and playing Mystique, from the movie "X-Men: First Class". As herself, she is a young woman with very lightly tanned skin, light brown hair reaching to her shoulders and wearing a sleeveless white dress. She is wearing light make-up and white earrings and smiling for the camera. As Mystique, she looks like a naked woman with dark blue, partly scaly skin and eyes with yellow sclera and irises. She has short orange hair neatly combed back. She is staring at the camera. There is someone off-screen smoothing her hair back? and there is a green screen behind her.]

I hated her as Mystique. I thought she was super annoying and whiny and it didn't seem like Jennifer Lawrence could separate some of her quirky personality from the way she talked and carried herself as Mystique.

This is a secret because I absolutely adore Jennifer Lawrence. I think she's lovely, but this character was just not right for her at all, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
She was a poor choice for Mystique because of her personality and a poor choice for Katniss because she doesn't look the part at all... but mostly, I have to admit it, her bloated face bothers me the most.

I don't know wheather I want you to get AIDS or Cancer. Fuck you, you trolly piece of shit.

I think her round face is cute and she is good as Katniss. Her skin is lighter than what I pictured reading the books but I don't really care.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Katniss wasn't really given much description in the books aside from being olive skinned (which covers a pretty wide range of skin color so...eh) and malnourished so I didn't really notice. I guess this was one of the few roles in Hollywood that actually would have been justified in casting a dangerously skinny actress (and while certainly not large by any stretch of the imagination, JL does not look at all malnourished) but it's not like it really mattered or took me out of the movie.

I love that movie but I didn't like her in that role either. She didn't seem like Mystique at all and as an original character I didn't like it either.

I liked her as Mystique, but didn't love her. Any problems I had were with the writing and not her acting, though; I love Jennifer and think she gave the role her all. She shouldn't be the same Mystique from the future, she needs to grow and change like the other characters, and I'm glad she's getting to. I'm interested in seeing what they're going to do with her in the next film; I hope she gets to kick a lot of ass.

Yeah, I didn't care for her as Mystique at all, but I blame that more on the writing than her performance because I hated everything about how the movie was handled. Maybe Lawrence had the range to deliver a cool but largely untried Mystique just coming into the skill, cunning, and self-possession she'd display later on in life (I don't follow the actress, so I can't say from her other work), but that wasn't how this version of Mystique was written in the first place, so there wasn't much she could do.

She's a very good actress. Try "Winter's Bone".

i still don't really think of her as mystique but i love jennifer lawrence a lot so idegaf

(Anonymous) 2013-12-05 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I really loved her in everything else I've seen her in but, dunno, don't like her in that movie.
