Okay so men can do this

but yeah I guess it'd be too much to expect a woman to do the same for a role, I mean that's just ~impossible~ with our female bodies.

Also pshh, relative unknowns can never put in good performances in comic book movies and become world famous overnight, that's never been known to happen!

How much work will she put in for what may well be a cameo in the stinger?

This isn't a full fledged movie. She's gonna probably make a short appearance at most. If this was a trinity movie we'd have gotten some hints by now.

Which means if she does look bulky, it'll probably be cgi instead of legit work. And that tends to look horrible.

The point is, what we should be worrying about is not how to best lambast this poor woman before any of her screens are even shot, but what direction the studio and director are actually planning to take this movie in. And also the writing. Mostly the writing.

Look, if the filmmakers want Wonder Woman to have a built, strong look, it will happen. They will move mountains to make it happen, and if the actress can't pull it off by the time production starts, they will recast her. Her role is small in this next film so this won't be terribly difficult.

And I for one am not worried about the small size of the role. It gives the actress time to ease into it, and if she's established here and it's well-received, we could get an origin story afterward that might have more success than if they'd just made that movie first.

oh I agree the writing is more imporant... and as I've stated, I'm writing off the writing as shit as a foregone conclusion based on the same peoples inability to write Jonathan Kent. They don't respect the characters so why would they start now?

So this admittedly more superficial reason is just icing on the shit cake. At lest if it was say, Gina Carano, we'd have an appropriate looking Wonder Woman on the screen again, which we haven't had since Lynda Carter. As it is, we won't have a well written or appropriate looking one at this rate.

I'm just going to point out that Lynda Carter didn't have that much experience before being cast for the show either. And by modern standard, she didn't have the 'right look'. Neither of which is here or there because:

Casting has never the problem with these Nolan-y movies. Every time another hubbub breaks out over a new actor, I just roll my eyes. This one, though, is especially nasty because it's mostly people tearing down a woman for her looks. As if actors' looks can't be changed. Like, come on.

He's built in both pictures; it's just a different kind. Both bodies have muscle.

This actress is a skeleton with some skin on it. I don't think she can bulk up enough. She has a totally different body type. I've got nothing against her, and I don't resent her for getting a good gig, but she just doesn't have the chops. She tends to be cast as a body, not a personality. If you look at her roles, she's always "the hot chick." So her casting reveals some pretty disturbing clues to how they want to portray Wonder Woman in these movies. It looks like she's going to be The Hot Chick That Hangs Out With Superman And Batman. And that's pretty worrisome.

That's not even close to being true. Many of my guy friends have gotten into weight training to change their 'skeleton with some skin' status. It takes a crazy protein diet and a lot of training but it works, and it works fast. The reason you don't see a lot of women going for this is because muscled is not the 'preferred' look for women; anyone who has that look must be dedicated to it from the start as opposed to guys who can opt for drastic changes.

This actress, presumably, will have the help of professional trainers. As I said, if the studio wants it, it will happen. The question is, do they want it? It's not constructive at all to bleat about what she looks like now; we should be making demanding noises about what we want to see in 2015.

You also seem to be utterly unfamiliar with film production schedules. You realize the movie's going to finish shooting well before it's released in 2015, right? Do you honestly think she can bulk up enough to play the role by then? Again, these Chris Helmsworth pictures reveal two different bodies THAT HAVE MUSCLE. This woman has no mass at all.

She might end up the same body type with some slightly larger arms. That's not Wonder Woman.

If it turns out that she simply can't bulk up -- and if bulked up is still the look they want -- then she will be recast. At this point, we can't just say, "No, it absolutely can't happen," because it does happen for some people (but not for others). She hasn't even tried yet, and we're already calling it a foregone conclusion. Having a naturally skinny body means it would be difficult for you to maintain a ripped look on a regular basis, not that it's impossible to get it that way for a few months.

For a big-budget film released in summer of 2015, we can expect production to go into 2014, possibly well into it with re-shooting and additional scenes and crap. And they will have to devote a lot of that time to filming, oh I don't know, THE BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN STUFF that the movie is actually about. WW's role is small, and whatever you want to say about that, here it can work to the actress's advantage. She's not starring in the movie, so she doesn't have to be there on day one. She could have as long as half a year.

What, you mean empirical evidence? Obviously not, because this is a hypothetical situation. I have faith in the belief that, should a person turn out to be unqualified for a job they were hired for, they would be replaced. Since that's how businesses work, and movie-making is one of those.

What I don't get here is your faith that the studios will recast someone who is conventionally attractive and has whatever qualities led them to cast her simply because they don't have the physical strength for the role.

I have absolutely no faith in that. As long as she's hot and an actress, I really don't think they give two shits whether she can pull off a convincing Wonder Woman.

It's probably because I'm nowhere near that point yet. See, I'm still at 'cautiously optimistic that this could turn out decent'. Speaking of the role long-term, yeah, she needs to do some serious work if we're going to be looking at a WW feature. For Batmas vs. Superman? A cameo at best? They just need to work on having her look right, and then we'll talk the future.

This is actually a negative example, but Sony is recasting Mary Jane for the new Spider-Man franchise. The former actress's scenes will not even be shown in Spider-Man 2. See: iconic character with small role in film, actress not deemed right for the job after being cast (for whatever reasons), hence recast. Sounds familiar? And this is for a movie coming out NEXT YEAR, not 2 years from now.

If people are really concerned about what the character will be like (as opposed to what she will look like), they should be yelling at Zach Snyder and David Goyer and the screams should be something like, "You'd better get this right you bastards or so help me!!!" Good writing and directing can coax great performances out of even bad actors. We don't even know if Gal is bad; she's new and Hollywood likes to cast her in 'hot chick' roles, which is not her fault.

But so far, all I see are comments directed at Gal Gadot and 99% of them appearance-related.

I don't see how "this woman isn't right for Wonder Woman" isn't a criticism of the casting.

Secondly, a better script isn't going to save someone who can't act. I just haven't seen any evidence that she can do more than recite lines. Which is, again, not any kind of moral failing on her part.

How is this different from everyone complaining about Ben Affleck as Batman? I saw a similar level of complaining if not more (because more people care about Batman).

Because her name is still the only one attached to those complaints. You can say, "Oh, and implied in this is a complaint about the director," but no one actually says it outright. We need to do that, name the right names, if we want the right people to take notice of the criticism. Personally, I find the Batfleck comments equally inane because I see little reason why he couldn't do a good job if he works at it. We should be encouraging him to do so. But at least those complaints aren't disproportionately geared toward tearing down his looks.

Gal Gadot hasn't been in a lot of things. Her biggest role to date was in FF, and obviously the director wasn't big on getting anything resembling a nuanced performance out of the character, so what could we expect? I just think the way thing is unfolding is a bit shit, is all. Imagine you're a new actress in Hollywood. All the roles people throw at you are stereotypical hot girls stuff, so you have to go along with that, which includes looking the part. Someone comes along and says, "Hey, we want you to do something different, we want you to be Wonder Woman." And then a million people start screaming about how you're a skinny bitch. Actors have to break into the industry somehow, and the way they make it is by getting good roles. This has the potential to be a career-maker. We should be congratulating the woman while also letting it be known what we expect to see.
