I don't consider them to be "worse" but I do consider them to be the most embarrassing and cringe worthy of fandom things. Manips are just ugh. And those Character/You fics give me so much second hand embarrassment.

People actually write you/character fics? Photomanips are good for a laugh and gave us one of my favorite fandom memes "his hed is pasted on yay!"

I honestly don't think there's anything in fandom worse than the creepy photo manipulations and You X Character fanfics. I'd rather read the most cliché Mary Sue you could throw at me.

I totally read this as creepy photo manips of You/Character and I was amazed that such a thing exists (and that I have yet to run across it). Then I re-read and was disappointed.

ngl, Photomanips have always given me major second hand embarrassment (I ran into more than a few back when I was in the Mass Effect fandom, and because of them, I associated Kaidan with 'Harlequin Romance Novel Photomanips' for a long time up until recently), but on the same token, I can't help but have a morbid admiration for one's lack of shame when it comes to making manips of, say, Sam and Dean as merpeople in complete sincerity.

I'd never come across Character/You fics before before because in archives you have to seek them out and click - on tumblr, they are just there, in the character tags, not behind a cut.

I think author (or obvious author stand-in) x character is worse than you x character. One's intentionally meant to satisfy a broad audience, and the other's posting your personal fantasies for all the world to see. (Plus, if you x character is OOC for the character, maybe the author thought you'd want that, but if author x character is OOC, the author clearly doesn't care about the IC character.)

I love me some Snape Wife manips, no lies. Some SPN manips on the other hand... those can be unnerving. However, it has never stopped me from laughing.

I find photomanips very creepy, but I just scroll past quickly whenever I see them. Not my thing, but plenty of other people seem to enjoy them so /shrug

I've not actually come across much reader/Character fic so I wouldn't know if I find it creepy. It doesn't sound any worse than really obvious self-insert fic to me.

You/Character fics are indeed incredibly weird. They're not in my fandom, thankfully, but the Hetalia ones hit the main page of DeviantArt distressingly often and sometimes I click out of morbid curiosity. Some of them just reach a level of sheer surrealism with their choice of "pairings", stuff like "injured puppy!reader x veterinarian!England" (not an actual example, to my knowledge, but I've seen plenty that cast one or both parties as animals)

I've seen the You x Character fics masked as everything under the sun, they usually reside innocently in OC tags, but they sometimes infiltrate various pairings ... which is even more odd (nope, not second person).

If they're written with readers in mind then they should avoid any descriptors at all but I've seen pleeeentyyyy. Gladly they usually go the "YOU ARE NOW A TOP MODEL" way, not creepily assuming who is reading.

Idk, creepy photo manips have this threshold where they stop being creepy and just become amazing through their sheer badness (like Draco's head pasted on a centaur).

I'll agree that you/character fics are just embarrassing though.

I have an RP partner who does manips occasionally, I even have one of her pieces on the profile of the account for my half of the pairing, and she has it on hers (it's Boromir and a half-elven OC represented by Chris Hemsworth).

Character/You fics I avoid like the plague. I haven't even tried to read any because the idea of Thorin Oakenshield talking to me is creepy. If he's gonna fuck someone, I'd rather it be Bilbo, or one of his nephews.

Aren't most Mary Sues self-inserts though? Doesn't that mean that those fics are basically author/character?

Photomanips are a bit stranger to me than reader/character fic. I think the fics are just masturbation fuel for some people, just like PWPs of canon characters.

The issue I would have for you/character is that they have no sense of actually who I am. (How could they?) So the dialogue has to assume I'm not saying anything or I'm reacting like in a particular way, which even if I do, I don't like being told I do, so it ends up irritating me.

At least Mary Sues are more personal to the author and never pretending to be me, so unless they're actually obnoxious, I'm not so put off.

Manips are either creepy or hilarious so I'm fascinated more often than I am put off (though I am occasionally put off).

Photomanips are amusing when they're just made to be crack. But serious ones? Yeah, those are creepy.

Thankfully I've never run into OC or AuthorxCanon character fics and I'd like to keep it that way.
