This! So much! I started watching the second movie a couple hours ago, and couldn't get past the first 15 minutes because they annoy me so much. The minions were kinda cute and funny in the first movie, but because everyone and their mother seem to ADORE them so much, they've turned something good into something annoying and overplayed.

THIS. OP R U ME. Everyone was in love with the minions, and I felt so weird because of wanting them to burn for their annoying facial expressions and their stupid unfunny jokes and just general idiocy. Oh, and they look ugly.

Ugh, I've never even watched these movies, but I had to listen to kids at the camp I work at imitate them all day, and it got kind of grating.

Absolutely agree. Haven't seen the second movie, but in the first they immediately struck me as incredibly... errr, calculated? Like they were made after some kind of formula for "funny little creatures".

Anyway, yeah.

This... isn't really much of an unpopular opinion, though? At least, on the internet it isn't. But real life, yeah, all of the casual viewers gush over them and I could care less for them in the second film.

Aw, I thought they were funny in small doses, at least.

And to add to that, some post-DM animated movies have started having their own "minion" characters. There were the little bears in The Lorax, and I remember seeing an ad for Free Birds which showed these yellow-suited dudes who are so obviously minion characters it made me groan. I mean, even more than the rest of the ad...

tbh I even hate these kids. what is it with kids seeking parental figures that grates on me so much? I don't wish for them to stay in that shitty orphanage and I get it's nice from a kid's perspective, but their entitleness and brattiness etc really made it annoying to watch.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I can tolerate the minions, but I despise their fans who gush over how cute and adorable they are and talk as if they're the main focus of the film, and it's like, wtf? I don't get people who watched the film for them, I watched it for Gru and the girls.

P.S. If you liked watching the relationship between Gru and the girls, don't bother with the sequel, as the girls are practically pushed out of the limelight. It pisses me off.

Urgh, yeah. There were a few moments I found the minions amusing, but overall... nope (I see that today is the day to complain about mascot characters, huh?)

Though, tangentially, what bothered me the most about Despicable Me was the mandatory Dance Party Scene at the end. Especially because I felt so bad for the girls... I've had younger sisters who did ballet. Imagine if they worked hard on a performance, practiced and prepared and looked forward to showing off their skills, and then halfway through it got hijacked by some techno stuff? They would /not/ have been dancing along happily. They'd have been right annoyed, and legitimately so.

Agreed. In the first movie, yeah, whatever, they were there and even sometimes mildly entertaining and I could deal with it because the rest of the movie was really good. In the second movie though, dang. They took over the film and what non-minion parts were left weren't nearly good enough to rescue it.

Secret 6 - Despicable Me

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the main cast of the CGI animated movie "Despicable Me": An expensively dressed short, bald man, three young girls clinging to him, and four yellow critters dressed as engineers? machinery workers?]

I like Despicable me for Gru and the girls... but I think the minions are incredibly annoying. I wish they weren't in the films.

Hehe. Bottom. *fart gun noise*
(All I know about Despicable Me 1 & 2 I learned from Wittertainment.)

I totally agree! Like, they were cute/funny for about twenty minutes, but then they just because extraneous and I was going "BUT I WANTED MORE STUFF ABOUT GRU AND THE GIRLS!!!!" whenever we cut to them. It was like the writers thought "ok, this plot needs some extra fun stuff and comic relief to keep it from being boring!" but instead, the plot was actually good and funny all on its own and the minions wound up being pointless.

They were pretty adorable in the advertizements, though.

Same here, I might have actually liked Despicable Me more if it hadn't had the minions in it and I didn't bother going to see the second one because they irritate the fuck out of me. I'm usually fine with side-kick characters, I like most of the Disney animals, but for some reason I can't stand the minions.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Annoying cutesy sidekicks are awful in just about everything, but they're always there.

Secret Time!

I only just recently learned that the girls weren't blood-related. It kind of blew my mind. :X

I enjoy the minions. In both movies.

Cool. I love the minions as does my mother. In fact she has a minion beanie that a family member made. She loves it and I'm jealous of it. Granted, neither of us will probably wear it out in public. But whatever, we love 'em, you don't. BFD.

I loved the minions. They're not the "thing I watched the movie for" - I definitely loved Gru's relationship with the girls - but I still thought the minions were awesome. YMMV.

yeah, I totally agree. But alas they are incredibly popular with the movie's target audience.

I can't enjoy these movies at all because the minions are so fucking awful. Also they look like boogers.

I didn't mind them in the first movie but they bugged me in the second. I think the thing I didn't like is in the first movie they didn't feel as...calculated, I guess? Like, the first movie they knew the minions would be popular but didn't let them take over the whole thing, the second movie the makers were like "HEY DON'T YOU ALL LOVE MINIONS? Here's some minions! Aren't they funny? More minions! BUY MINION MERCHANDISE!" I know cuddly sidekicks for the kids are a staple of US animated movies, but I have a threshold for how much shameless marketing I can handle.
