A school counselor once compared my personality to his earring. Because he, like, takes it out when he's around people who might not like it.

WELL THANKS I'LL JUST TAKE MY PERSONALITY IN AND OUT, THEN.

...Advice in general is kind of dodgy, especially unasked-for advice given to children. It always seems like it was meant for someone that isn't you, and the people who like giving it don't seem to think.

That so horrible that it almost becomes hilarious advice. It's so demeaning and such a terrible analogy.

I know! I think I took it in stride at the time, but in retrospect... WTF?! It's hilarious.

Also, my mom was there at the time, so she occasionally brought it up when I was being obnoxious. GOD DAMMIT PEOPLE MY BRAIN IS NOT AN EARRING WHY ARE YOU STRUGGLING WITH THIS CONCEPT!? XD

I want brain earrings now. They would actually be adorable and relate to my interest in biology.

... wow, that's horrible. I can almost sort of see what he might have really been trying to say, but what an awful way to say it. And that's assuming he wasn't just an asshole. :/

(And what I think he might have meant was something along the lines of the fact that you have to consider who you're with, which is true to some extent - I have interests my friends don't share and vice versa, so there are things we can talk about and do together and other things we can't. But it's not like we have to take out our personalities. WTF.)

He was probably kind of a jerk, or maybe just kind of bats (I have a track record with this, ask me about the time a shrink threatened to stab me with a voodoo doll), but yeah, I mostly think he was using a fucked-up analogy that he hadn't thought all the way through.

I think that's what he was getting at, yeah. My solution to this problem ended up being just spending time with people who, you know, actually like me and don't expect me to treat aspects of myself like jewelry.

(...Now I'm wondering if this subconsciously gave me my taste in wacky earrings. Or influenced me to get cartilage piercings that I don't take in and out. :P)

I think I was around 8 at the time, so it was a year or two after the Earring Incident. I found the voodoo doll in his office and asked what it was. He said, in a flat matter-of-fact tone, not goofing around or anything, that he'd stick me with it if I was bad.

I mean, I don't think he believed it, but I kind of think he wanted me to believe it. The same dude pretended to call Santa and told him not to bring me any presents if I kept being "bad." (In retrospect, I was not a bad kid. Just kind of weird. NO PRESENTS FOR WEIRDOS! XD)
