1. Just because someone is white and blond doesn't mean they aren't of an ethnic group. White people have ethnic subgroups just like other races. Pretty obviously: Mediterranians =/= Germanics =/= Celts =/= Slavics. Even if they are all white people, those cultural differences are important.

2. Tumblr is not progressive. It's mostly full of teenagers and younger adults who have little experience in real-world activism and are encouraged by the site's culture to have a very black-and-white view on these kinds of topics.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
To your second point, I think they are encouraged by their under-developed brains to have a very black-and-white view. (This has been proven by studies, and by every adult, ever, who after reaching a certain age, goes "Yeah, they were right, it really is all morally grey.") Unfortunately, this black-and-white view is starting to bleed over into real life, where everything is so PC nowadays, people are actually losing their jobs, over remarks they make on their own time, on social media.

"under-developed brains"

god, you sound really gross

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Teenagers/young adults do have under-developed brains, though?

OMG! Science is ageist!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
the argument is still gross the way you use it- as accusation instead of clemency.
Where's YOUR adult point of view of not seeing everything in black in white?
And how the fuck are these teenagers influential enough to make everything PC, sheesh.

Are you fucking serious?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-12-09 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
The biggest most vocal, crazy parts of many fandoms + disposable income = catered to. That's how they influence all kinds of shit.

And clemency? No. Eventually forgiveness as they grow older and wiser perhaps ("We've all done stupid shit as kids.") but not that. Stupid shit people do is stupid shit people are responsible for. One hopes they can mature to laugh at it later.

Also, you sound like a butthurt teen. Go blog about it and try not to cry to hard over your one direction mp3 you didn't even pay for.

AQZ

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound really teenager. What's the matter? Can't handle that your brain doesn't finish developing until around twenty?

Re: AQZ

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
diff anon

Twenty-five, actually. That's when the rewiring that goes on during puberty finally finishes up.

Re: AQZ

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like you have complexes about not being a teenager, if you have to use it as an insult

Shhh, it's ok. I'm probably older than you and I still enjoy fandom with dignity. I'm sure that all of you will grow out of bashing the crazy youngsters by the age of 30.

Re: AQZ

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
More like 25. Once I hit about 20 and realized what was going on in my head, it was really fun watching my brain get bigger and smarter over the next 5 years. It was weird, but I knew it was going to happen so I was able to encourage it.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
lol this is actually a scientific fact, idiot.

While it's definitely influenced by teenagers and young adults, unfortunately I've seen a lot of older fans involved in that, too, so it's not just an age or generational thing. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Didn't you know? All white people are privileged always. Even the ones that count as ethnic minorities in their own country.

Also, according to tumblr, white people have no culture. That's why they steal other cultures. Lets ignore the centuries' old cultures from many predominantly white European countries. Nope, doesn't count. They're white therefore they have no culture. *rolls eyes*

Bagpipes are about the only thing Scottish left about Scottish people in Australia. "Play bagpipes at my funeral"... that's it.

White Americans don't have a distinct culture.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed; they have several.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
uhhh you're not from the U.S., are you?
gondremark: (Default)

[personal profile] gondremark 2013-12-09 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
White American IS a culture, it's just so pervasive we can't see the forest through the trees.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfectly said. You don't truly know your own culture until you actively come into contact with another culture and its people and see how the way they act, interact etc is different from your own culture's.

Boy is it ever, and it's infiltrating the rest of the world in its own distinctive way. It's just one I happen to generally despise (as an non US person).

I got called a racist TWICE on the same day I got my NAACP membership card

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-09 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
That was amusing on many, many levels. >:)

But in all seriousness - I'm all for online activism, but not when it results in people taking the end goals/causes less seriously because some online activists refuse to see things like context, intent, and gray area.
