Unfortunately, it wasn't something along the lines of showing people my bare arse. My main problem was with the fact that on many occasions I used words that are considered insulting without meaning to insult anyone. Thus, I customarily used the word "idiot" to describe just about any and every person ('well, I went to the market yesterday, and there was this idiot selling carrots'), which eventually led to me calling the director of our school an idiot in front of her entire class. It went something like this:

[it is a music lesson. I'm bored out of my mind, so I doodle, chat to my best friend, et c.]
director(d): dreemyweird, if you are not interested in Mozart, you can stand up and walk out of the class.
me: *stands out and prepares to walk out of the class, which visibly enrages the director*
d: dreemyweird! You are free to dislike Mozart, but you ought to respect him, because he was an important historical figure.
me: Hitler was an important historical figure. Should I respect Hitler?
d: You understand nothing! >(
me: You are an idiot. *walks out of the class*

In retrospect, it was a pretty assholish move. But I didn't really mean to insult her, I just wished to indicate that she was in the wrong. I wouldn't be offended if somebody else called me an idiot.

Also, sometimes I still find myself saying super awkward things to those around me. Like, the last time I remember, I was visiting a friend of our family, and somebody asked me to pass some kind of sauce along. I did. They asked me what the sauce was. I replied: "IDK, some random crap". And... yyeah. The word "crap" was supposed to be neutral, the way "thingy" is.

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaah but she kind of wasn't wrong...? ;-) Thanks for the context. So, are you saying you think your tone makes words OK/not OK (i.e., neutral vs. bad)? Because people are not generally good at picking up on tone, as a rule.

Did your Hitler remark at least get a laugh?

I still don't think that anyone's obligated to 'respect' historically important people, but she certainly had a point. It's just that back then I was sure the facts were on my side. I was a pretty judgemental child.

No, it isn't about tone; I'm probably worse at picking up on it than most of the people around me. It's just that I deprived these words of their negative connotations and used them as neutral. In my books, "idiot" has never been an insult.

As to the Hitler remark, yes. The entire class huffed with laughter :)

DA

There's a point where you can't be disingenuous about how other people react to words with negative connotations, though. Unless you're around certain people long enough that they know that's how you talk casually.

Yeah, you're not obligated to respect or even acknowledge...anyone, really. Especially dead historical figures. It's nice if you do, but I hate it when people pretend to give you an option not to do so and then act surprised when you take them up on it.
