"Focus on school". Other problems taken into account, nobody told me networking and experience are important. Just grades. You can imagine my prospects.

"Bullies are just jealous" or "Ignore them." Yeah, no. Different people bully for different reasons, and ignoring sometimes made it worse.

"You're smart; you'll figure it out." It's not so much advice, but it's a bad attitude to have with a kid asking for help.

I hate the whole "you're smart; you'll figure it out" thing, so much. I used to get told that whenever I had questions, and surprise, guess who has trouble asking for help when something is going wrong irl.

I got "You'll figure it out" from my boss. When he was scolding me for not doing something and I responded with "I couldn't figure out how to do it and there was nobody to ask." He then proceeded to spend the rest of the three years I worked under him criticizing me for not asking questions.

I hate that. Then you use sticky notes, but those are so easy to lose... as much as I hate to admit it, for me it's come to emails and text messages.

"Focus on school"

Worst advice really. You have to network and experience is crucial in today's tough job market

Here's the thing about the "focus on school" thing: it only works if you are phenomenally smart. I've known people who took their straight As and perfect SAT scores and summa cum laude class ranks right to the bank and have been very successful, but for the majority of us? "Focus on school" means "focus on your grades, internships, and clubs." Nobody ever makes that explicit, though. :/
