OP is already basing their stuff on existing stuff. I mean, if we get fairy tale adaptations and pile them together with all the other stuff based on myths, religion or classics like The Wizard of Oz, we have a pretty big chunk of modern media right there. Just because there's a lot, though, doesn't mean there's nothing unique about them.
