I know it's not what you meant, but I want to point out that if Sami people are white and Kristoff is wearing Sami clothes, then there's no reason not to think he's a Sami.

...except for his name.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? You think every ethnic group sticks 100% to their naming conventions?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
If they meant for him to be Sami in a fantasy world populated by characters very obviously Scandinavian, they've done the equal of creating a character born and bred in the Austrian Alps and naming him Jean-Luc.

Hey! Now why you bagging on lil' Jean-Luc or his parents? That french doctor saved the mom and the baby's life! It was their way of honoring him!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Not really? Kristoff shows up interacting with older men who we don't know the background of. His family could have easily been in contact with the rest of the kingdom's culture...specially considering he's been a trader since little, so we can assume that either of his parents got him into the business.

Why is being from an ethnic minority equal to being isolated?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
wasn't he named by trolls tho? or did he already have a name before he was adopted by them? I can't remember

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, many - or even most - Sami have a regular Scandinavian or Finnish name (forename, surname or both) so a Sami called Kristof would be nothing extraordinary.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, Kristoff isn't even a Scandinavian name. The Scandinavian version of the name is Kristoffer, but our ostensibly Sami friend here must have had his name borrowed from some Central European majority culture he's been influenced by.

Among the older generation in Norway and Sweden at least you'll find a pool of names that are way overrepresented among the Sami. I'm not saying they should have named him Ante Sara Gaup or anything, but if they meant for him to be taken as Sami in either of these two countries, it could have been a start to use a name such as Mikkel or Mattis or Isak or Nils instead of, well, making one up.

OP

Oh, actually I was thinking of that when I made this secret. But I wanted to keep the focus to just one point, since I've made secrets with multiple trains of thoughts and what I'm actually trying to say always seems to get lost.

Even with this, it's being interpreted by a couple people that I don't think the Sami are oppressed because they are white, whereas I don't think that at all; it's more, "too many white people" is not a 100% applicable argument when it comes to diversity and ethnic minorities, and you just end up looking stupid and off-putting other people if you keep harping on that one buzzline.

Don't worry, OP, some of us got your point.
