That's the fallback of the golden rule - not everyone wants to be treated the same way. This is something I've had to deal with with friends who have very different personalities from mine.

I think the golden rule works if you use context and are smart about it. Like, don't be mean to people, don't be selfish, things like that...but specific interpersonal reactions? no, it really doesn't work for that.
