Lots and lots of Jews are not light-skinned or stereotypically 'Semitic' looking though -- not like "obvious african exceptions", either. There have been lively communities of Indian, Chinese, Caribbean, and Ethiopian Jews, as well as Jews all over the spectrum of Eastern and Western Europe and the near east.

Sorry to be the stereotypical Jew-by-Choice bitch, but as a pale-skinned, redheaded totally non-Semitic looking Jew in a West Indian congregation peopled with predominantly dark-skinned Jews with African or South Indian ancestry, I'm totally personally OVER bullshit about how Jews are supposed to look.

Yeah, but if they ever visit Israel they get sterilized for not being Jewish enough. I wish I was making that up too, but Israel has (or at least had until they got found out) a policy of sterilizing non-white and non-semitic Jews.

Jewish is both a religion and a cultural group. People seem to miss this, anyone from any background can convert to a religion; a culture is something you grow up with, and you can be Jewish in both ways or just one.

At the Diaspora Museum there's an exhibit meant to show exactly that - they show pictures of Jews from all over the world, and no two look alike. Jews come in basically every race and color.

It's actually exciting that nowadays more East-Asian Jews are showing up, as some of the descendants of Chinese Jews decide to convert, and there are some Korean and Japanese converts as well.
