I'd suggest start with the anime and go from there. I tried the manga after seeing the first episode of the anime and near gave up on it because of the terrible art. I'd say watch the anime first and then jump to the manga if it hooks you. (There's also three spinoff manga as well -- one's just a silly comedy thing, one's apparently based off a prequel light novel and the other focuses on the series most popular character pre-series. None are necessary to understand the main series, though, so you're free to ignore them).
