SNK/Attack On Titan

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to start watching this so I can read the fanfic (yeah really shallow reasons), so does anyone know where I should start? Or have links to whatever it is I should start?

...With the first episode?

I don't really get what you're asking, sorry. Either way, I'd personally recommend you read the manga instead.

While it's true that the manga has a lot of advantages, if OP elects to go that route, they should just be prepared for a rather bad drawing style, especially at the beginning. I know that I was taken aback. Transferring after watching a few episodes of the (very pretty) anime, I was already invested in the story so I didn't mind.

But yeah, start at the beginning...?

It should be noted with the manga vs anime thing that there are some differences, and the English-speaking parts of fandom seem to largely favor the anime. Reading the manga and watching the anime is probably the way to go if they want to be fully involved in the fandom.

I think watching the anime is fine, and I say this as a dedicated manga fan. For anyone really looking to get into the series, and wanting to be able to keep up to date on all the spoilers and the current storyline, but who also wants to watch the anime, I'd recommend watching up to episode 20 in the anime, and then continuing on from chapter 28 in the manga.

Um, I'd just like to clarify, I recommend stopping from episode 20, because the anime starts making a lot more notable divergences from the manga canon from around that point. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's easier to understand the manga storyline if you read earlier from the chosen ending point of the anime (which was around chapter 34)

What the others said. It's not yet one of those endless 10 seasons+ series that's been running through tons of story arcs with fillers and everything, so just start with the first episode. There are no spinoffs or anything yet, not that I know of at least.

Thanks. :3 I didn't know if it was one of those animes with a manga. And a AU manga. And an anime based off the manga, off the anime.

I think it's at 25 episodes and about 4 special episodes at the moment and even though later on, some scenes differ from the manga, it's not that different that you'd have to read the manga to get everything that's going on in the fandom. So it should be managable. I think there are no AU versions and novels adaptions yet XD

Re: SNK/Attack On Titan

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You should start with the first episode, but I would strongly advise against entering the fandom before, at the very least, watching episode 22. Untagged spoilers abound everywhere, which is why I'd also recommend reading the last ten or so chapters of the manga after you finish the anime. There's a lot of wham stuff in that series, but if you're just interested in the basic setting+characters and could care less about the spoilers, manga reading isn't necessary.

It's all on crunchyroll, too, which operates under the same basic idea as Hulu (episodes with commercials.) It's pretty easy to find streaming, and free.

I know a place aside from CR, but I'm not sure what this comm's policy about links to legally questionable material.

/is considering starting SnK herself, but needs to work on her Secret Santa fic first...

FS has no policies as far as I'm aware, but don't link if you don't feel comfortable. I'm sure OP is capable of using Google and Filestube and such on their own. :)

I'm kind of excited you're thinking about starting SnK, though, if I can say that? You generally have pretty good comments, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you thinl/

I'm ok with it, I just didn't want to break the F!S rules.

Awww, thanks!
Though like I said, I kinda have other things to do at the moment, so it'll be late this month or early next before I start.

which is why I'd also recommend reading the last ten or so chapters of the manga after you finish the anime

That's just going to confuse OP because the manga is far, far beyond where the anime stopped. Talk about huge spoilers...

AYRT

Holy crap, I didn't realize the manga had made it all the way to chapter 51! For reference to anyone who cares, the anime left off on chapter 34 (so 17 chapters behind instead of 10, as of right now). If you read 34 to 44, though, you'll get most of the "common" spoilers that happen after the anime.

And that's why I recommended they read it, actually--I know from experience that it's really easy to stumble across those spoilers in fanfiction, so they'll probably be spoiled one way or another. Times like this, I wish fandom labels made a distinction between manga and anime like they do with comics and comics-based movies.

Very true. If you want to avoid big spoilers, stay away from fandom!! And even just google searching about the series in general

Here's where I get my anime: Anime Season. This links directly to their Attack on Titan Page (they use the Japanese title, Shingeki no Kyojin).

THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS THE FIRST EPISODE/CHAPTER/VOLUME

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-12-09 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
And anybody who ever tells you otherwise for ANY FUCKING THING that isn't serial and rebooting in nature (Dr. Who, Different Star Trek Series, etc) is full of shit and a lazy fuck.

Even if season one sucked, you watch it for the context.

I'd suggest start with the anime and go from there. I tried the manga after seeing the first episode of the anime and near gave up on it because of the terrible art. I'd say watch the anime first and then jump to the manga if it hooks you. (There's also three spinoff manga as well -- one's just a silly comedy thing, one's apparently based off a prequel light novel and the other focuses on the series most popular character pre-series. None are necessary to understand the main series, though, so you're free to ignore them).
