I think some of the things the characters say and do are due to the time they're in; it's probable that my grandparents held similar views or also lacked understanding about certain things in the 60s. But there's things that are wrong regardless of the time, too. I think even for his time, Don's supposed to be a sleazy womanizer.
But it's definitely tricky, and I'm not really sure where you draw the line. :/
