Re: Another one. "Everyone is beautiful."

(Anonymous) 2013-12-09 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
You are not the only person who feels this way!

I am not attractive. I'm actually pretty fucking ugly by most peoples' standards. So is my mom. So are many members of my family. So are millions of other people in the world. And that's okay! We have other traits and talents that make us really neato people, being 'pretty' or 'beautiful' or whatever doesn't have to be one of them.

I think that cultural meme of telling everyone they're beautiful is incredibly damaging, because society as a whole will never reinforce that message. I will never pick up an issue of Vogue and see someone who looks like me on the cover, ever. But saying 'everyone is beautiful' makes it into this thing that everyone should be, and if you aren't beautiful, or if you don't feel beautiful, then you start to think something's wrong with you. Like you're one of the outcast ugly freak people, rather than just being a normal average person who is not a 10/10 demigod on the scale of attractiveness.

Rather than telling everyone they're beautiful and fabulous and the most flawlessly lovely person in the world because everyone is beautiful, I wish we change things to "It's okay to look or feel ugly."
