Another one. "Everyone is beautiful."

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-12-09 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean physically, not our personalities.

No. Not everyone is beautiful. Some of us are ugly. And that's okay, because physical beauty isn't that important compared to your core personality, talents, everything that makes you a good human being. You can be a wonderful, kind, talented person in a golem body.

But instead everyone is saying LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN to, like, the ugliest people. Not LOOK AT THIS WONDERFUL PERSON, not LOOK AT THIS SMART LADY, but LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ISN'T SHE GORGEOUS IN THIS OUTFIT THAT MAKES HER LOOK LIKE SOME KIND OF SAUSAGE WITH THAT GIGANTIC FACE BOIL, SHE IS FABULOUS.

No. Fuck you. All this has lead to is me not believing people when they say I look good because they're probably just saying that because that's just a thing you say now. They don't mean it. It's empty. I doubt I'm the only person who feels this way. You want to pay someone a compliment? Find something you actually like about them.

I agree.

Hmmm. I guess I can see where you coming from, but I don't really agree. This is more speaking for myself than anything, but when I talk to someone and really connect with them in a conversation, if they show any amount of kindness, I start to notice any physical features that I personally think are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Likewise, if someone treats me very poorly, their physical features that would generally be considered unattractive become glaringly obvious to me. I'm also the type of person who will compliment someone's talents that have nothing to do with physical appearance if I notice them.

"Ugly" is kind of overused anyway. People use it so flippantly that it sort of lost all meaning and could be referencing someone who generally would be considered average or even good looking.

I'm not advocating calling people ugly--that's mean. I'm talking about not laying the "you're beautiful!" comment down like some kind of overused blanket.

Oh okay, then I agree. It's a bit annoying when someone's talents get overlooked just to be complimented on their appearance. Like if someone just got a job promotion for being hardworking and innovative, but their family decides to compliment them for "losing weight" instead.

YES. THANK YOU. I am not and will never be pretty. I've accepted it and focus on more important things. So people saying "all women are beautiful, just look at her smile" kind of pisses me off.

You are not the only person who feels this way!

I am not attractive. I'm actually pretty fucking ugly by most peoples' standards. So is my mom. So are many members of my family. So are millions of other people in the world. And that's okay! We have other traits and talents that make us really neato people, being 'pretty' or 'beautiful' or whatever doesn't have to be one of them.

I think that cultural meme of telling everyone they're beautiful is incredibly damaging, because society as a whole will never reinforce that message. I will never pick up an issue of Vogue and see someone who looks like me on the cover, ever. But saying 'everyone is beautiful' makes it into this thing that everyone should be, and if you aren't beautiful, or if you don't feel beautiful, then you start to think something's wrong with you. Like you're one of the outcast ugly freak people, rather than just being a normal average person who is not a 10/10 demigod on the scale of attractiveness.

Rather than telling everyone they're beautiful and fabulous and the most flawlessly lovely person in the world because everyone is beautiful, I wish we change things to "It's okay to look or feel ugly."
