Err, in what ways did they say it did? Nothing in the movie delves into culture, really, besides mid-to-late 1800s fantasy. And even then that's mostly dressing, since a lot of the characters' attitudes are pretty modern.

(different anon)

"Role-playing a Disney character that makes a mockery of my people is racist; it is an act of speaking over actual indigenous voices in order to continue the distribution of a settler approved misrepresentation of indigeneity. The people behind ‘Frozen’ have not consulted any actual Saami elders in the process of making their film, and thus everything about it as far as Kristoff goes is offensive, racist and laughable.

If you truly want to apologize, quit role-playing a caricature of my people and start learning about us from accurate sources instead."

I'm sorry, but I can't take this person seriously.

Well, it's obviously personal for him. Maybe he's being a little unfair to the roleplayer but it's not really my place to judge him for how he handles his anger about his culture being misrepresented, you know?

Yeah, but role-playing as a character you had no idea is seen as a mockery of a culture by someone is not an act of racism. That's just liking a character and wanting to enjoy it. Him calling that person racist for it is ridiculous. If the person did something else that is actually racist, fine. But just role-playing as a Disney character, unaware that someone finds the character offensive? Not racist.

I get the feeling if it were about a character that was seen as a "PoC" more people would be stepping up to agree.

However I did notice one of the main Kristoff RPers is WILDLY miss-informed about a lot of stuff that is shown in the movie itself and I hate that they can't even research real, though outdated, professions before answering the stupid people that ask him shit.

Can you tell I find RP tumblrs annoying?

I can't really comment about their issues with the music, since they seem to be much more immersed in that subject. But I don't think that dragging the professional Saami composer through the mud for not agreeing with them is an actual criticism for the movie.

"it’s stereotyping us and presenting an exotified picture of us to the world, where we’re once again turned into nothing but exotic Others to be ogled by the majority." kristoff is a... character that happens. He's never othered, he's never seen as an outsider, he's not even comic relief (anymore than the rest of the characters are). The point does stand that he's never specified to be Sami or not, so it's not outright representation and it's just word-of-god by this point. It's their prerogative not to support the movie, though. As someone who isn't white, though, I don't get what it is that they're asking of it-- there's not a lot of cultural elements in the movie besides 'fantasy and also a kingdom'. It's not Pocahontas or Hunchback of Notre Dame; those movies dealt directly with racial issues so there was a lot to fuck up in them.

(also they're flatly wrong about the feministic tones of the movie. Anna and Elsa have A LOT of agency and the focus is always on them and them dealing with the consequences of their actions and learning about themselves and their relationship. It's still not the Snow Queen, and it's sad that they claim it was inspired by the fairytale because if they'd just said it was an original story it'd stand well on its own)
