Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone actually prefer this to slash and het romance/smut/UST?

Re: Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the mood and the fandom. I read it all, but I go through cycles. Also when I'm just starting out in a fandom I pretty much only read gen.

Re: Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
My hierarchy of fic preference is like this:

Gen > slash (both manslash & femslash) > het

So yeah. I'd take excellent gen fic over romance any day.

It depends on the fandom. I have a couple fandoms I'll only read gen for because I don't want to read romance or smut for any of the pairings.

A million times over tbh.

I rarely read gen and it's not what I'm usually looking for, but they can be nice reads when I'm in the mood or desperate for canon supplements.

Yep. And it's got nothing to do with not liking romance or certain pairings. I just like gen better.

I don't prefer it but I bookmark a lot more of it!

Gen > f/f > m/f > m/m for me.

I like gen fic more than het or slash (mainly because it's rarer so I feel more gratified when I find good satisfying gen fic), but usually only by a small amount.

However, there are also certain short periods where I get so sick of all the fucking romance fics everywhere that I will refuse to read anything that is not gen.

Re: Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually. I have periods where I really crave smut but overall I'm more interested in gen.

Depends on the fandom and what specifically makes me to seek out fic. Sometimes it's a matter of, "OMG this show is so awesome but I won't get any more for another week! I want exactly what the show is providing but MORE of it!" and then I look for gen casefic/episode-fic. Sometimes there's one detail from an episode that goes unaddressed, or a character's response or reaction to something that we don't see, and then I want missing-scene fic. Sometimes I'm really in the mood for plot, and then I want for-want-of-a-nail AUs. And sometimes I get really obsessed over a character or ship, and I want romance. So it really depends on what I'm getting out of the canon and what I'm craving from the fandom at a particular moment; I don't think there's one thing that I "prefer" in general.

Yes yes yes. I don't really enjoy reading much explicit content. And there's always more risk in shippy fic that it will be really OOC (especially for non-canon pairings), or will bash/put down other characters. My favorite stories are usually "missing episode" type fics where the author invents an adventure that could pretty seamlessly fit into the canon narrative.

I don't seek it out, but I appreciate character-centric fic without a romance element. Just like I appreciate character-centric books without a romance element. Action / plot-driven gen fic, not so much.

Re: Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. If I want to read gen I'll read a book.

Depends on the situation. Sometimes I don't wind up shipping my favorite character in a fandom, so in those cases I prefer gen (although I don't avoid shipping fic unless it's a ship I really hate for them).

Other times I get an OTP and then I can't get enough of shipping.

I don't like smut at all, though, and skip over those parts in fic even when I am reading for the ship. My shipping preferences are pretty asexual most of the time (which isn't to say that the CHARACTERS are necessarily asexual, or even that I am, just that ... sexy isn't generally a reason why I ship anything? yeah)

Depends on how you're defining 'gen', I guess? Because I personally adore gen fics, but I define it as "fics where the focus isn't on romance, but that doesn't mean that background ships don't exist", if that makes sense?

Like, a road trip fic in the MCU where the focus is on the trip, but background mentions of Thor/Jane or Tony/Pepper would still count as gen to me. :)

Depends on the fandom. I like certain stories when it's about the whole crew, rather than everyone pairing off.

Re: Gen fic

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
definitely. I read some romance, but mostly I avoid it--not so much because I hate mushy stuff or anything like that, but there seems to be a higher percentage of dreck and purple prose in romance...give me a good solid plotty genfic any day of the week.

I DO have a weakness for FRIENDship fic, however.

Quite a lot do. I prefer it in certain fandoms where i don't ship anyone at all. Like - Criminal Minds and Law&Order, i don't ship anyone that's not a canon 'ship, so the gen stuff is awesome.

Nobody prefers gen. They're liars.

For serious though, depends on the mood and characters I want to read about. There might be one character I just don't like, don't even ship, but whose dynamic with their sister is what makes me melt like I'm an icecube in a dog's mouth. Fic, and meta to an extent, is more for me exploring and seeing ideas and dynamics that aren't explored enough (imo) in canon. It's definitely skewed towards romance, au, and perceived repression, but they're certainly not the only things I want.

If I was reading "just like canon" fic, I wouldn't even call that gen so much as "extended universe wannabe" fic.

It depends on the fandom really, most of the time I'd go with no but there are some cases where I much prefer GEN fic to anything shippy.

It depends on the fandom? I generally like really shippy romance fics, but I LOVE some good friendship-focused gen fic. Honestly, my favorite (kind of rare) type of Doctor Who fic is friendship-focused gen fic centered around Rose, Martha and Donna (though I usually specifically seek out Rose x Martha friendship).

I like a bit of romance in my fics, I can't lie. I did go through a phase where I really loved reading gen Sam and Dean fics, however. Like others have said, it also depends on the fandom. Doctor Who to me, would be lots of gen fics. I'm not partial to smutty DW fics.
