Could a character with a prejudice be sympathetic?
So I have to ask.....is it possible that I could have a character be prejudiced against something and still be sympathetic. Would they have to be changed to be considered a good character? I have a couple characters that are prejudiced but still intended to be sympathetic though their prejudices are cases of Fantastic Racism.
One is a girl and boy who are wary of and distrusting of telepaths in a society where having a single or two superpowers is common for one group of people. Their brother was Mind Raped by someone with telepathic ability.
The second is a girl who was raised by a man who had theories about the existence of Psi (the people with powers) and firmly believed they're a threat and considered them less than human. She hunts them and brings them to her father to test on (it's implied he twists her arm into it). She is reluctant sometimes and doesn't catch kids but still secretly hates them and is jealous that her father spends most time studying Psi. She secretly envies them for being "special" and having her dad's attention. She learns from it by watching her father experiment on a peer , a teen she brought him and later she busts him out and runs away. She also refuses to capture young children.
Would they be sympathetic?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)I think the first characters are definitely sympathetic. The second one is...less so considering she kidnaps people to be experimented on. I don't think arm twisting is really enough to justify that (though I guess it depends on how it's written) but it seems like you intend to redeem her by having her have a change of heart and rescue one of her peers. idk, I think it just depends on how she's written. she could either be nuanced character with layers and flaws or she could come off as some dick who kidnaps people with a flimsy daddy angst freudian excuse
Re: Could a character with a prejudice be sympathetic?
Also he's taught her that the people she's hunting are dangerous and threats. She'e been taught to believe they need to be controlled because they have so many dangerous powers that could kill or seriously mess up people. Their society also is very encouraging of taking advantage of mundanes like the girl and her father). Her father is interested in studying how the power works to figure out how to make them "normal" or get their abilities.
So it's really all she knows. Her change of heart begins when she unknowingly dates a boy with shape-shifting powers. Later when she finds out he's "one of them" she captures him -partly feeling betrayed and out for revenge. She starts feeling guilty watching her father experiment on the boy and treat him like something barely even human(referring to him as a "beast". At first she holds on to her anger that "he lied to her/didn't tell her" but talking to him she learns why he didn't (because he was afraid) . That slowly gets her to realize that he and his kind are just like her. She breaks him out when the guilt becomes too much and finally runs away, also getting freedom from her own abusive father.
Her relationship with her father, who's fanatical about his studying, is shown. The father keeps her there and dominates her, trying to keep her from leaving like her mother did. It's also implied that she feels guilt every time she hunts and kidnaps her targets , which makes her hate them all the more.
So yeah I don't know if that changes anything.....the prejudice is all she's ever known and been constantly pounded in to her, and it has reasons that are rooted in reasonable fears and concerns. and it's not just a flick of the switch. "Oh I love hunting you freaks" --> "My daddy made me do it"

On the other, yeah it's a scary ability that makes people uneasy.and they're less raging bigots and more "I don't trust you and I don't like you , stay away from me"
