Actual books might be better if you want clothing porn. Most people know how the characters already look, so they might not delve into the what the characters are wearing.

A lot of times the author goes into too much detail when describing the clothes. This includes regular published fiction too, so if that's your thing I'd look there as opposed to fic.

This is just my own experience but I find it hard to accurately visualise the kind of detail in clothing that it seems like you're referring to. I could read a full description of an outfit but I just can't hold the detail in my imagination and end up just envisioning the gist of the outfit. For example I might know that a character is wearing jeans, a black t-shirt and sneakers, but I don't know what design is on the shirt, I don't really pay much attention to the cut of the jeans or the wash, I might know that the shoes are mostly white but if they have any other colours on them I'm not picturing that, etc. That's just me, but it might explain why not as many writers focus on it.

OMG SO MUCH LACE. I have a guilty adoration of lace, even if it itches like a bitch.

I have been informed that only cheap lace itches. Quality stuff is, apparently, quite comfortable. As I haven't ever experienced this mythical comfortable lace myself, I can't comment one way or the other.

But it's nice to imagine people running around in frothy lace and feeling perfectly comfortable, right? ^_~

It's true, but you can get affordable comfort lace. Marks and Spencer do it, and there's kinky knickers, they are very soft lace.

Thanks! I'll have to keep that in mind for if I'm ever in an area with those retailers.

Depends on the material, yes. Polyester cookie-cutter lace tends to itch, yes, knitted lace is comfortable.

Ah! Thanks so much for the clarification! Now I know what to look for!

Secret 6 - Shipping fanfiction, clothing

[Picture is a sepia-tone picture of a woman wearing old-fashioned undergarments and leaning in a seductive pose against a chair while she holds a flower in one hand.]

I wish more shippy fic would elaborate on how good the clothes look. Fic writers seem to only care about the characters' ~*expressive blue eyes*~ or their gorgeous nekkid body, and I really want clothing porn (especially in period pieces).

I find it difficult to make clothing descriptions interesting, maybe it's not just me?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually include a line or two about what people are wearing, simply because clothing can say a lot about a character. I can think of several other writers in various mediums who do too so I'd argue that it's a style thing. And like most styles, it's just not everyone's thing. So, uh, don't worry about it?

You should definitely read a thing called My Immortal. Just sayin'.

Seriously, I know what you mean, but clothing-porn often makes one's writing ridiculous (as do regular super lengthy descriptions! Not everyone is Honore de Balzac, and all that your writing about "the marble column of his neck" does is make me huff with laughter). A couple of nice details thrown in? Gorgeous, gimme more. Actual lengthy descriptions?.. nno. Remember, in period pieces, especially if they are written from the perspective of an in-universe character, the ~super exotic Victorian/Edwardian/Regency underwear~ would be seen the way we see, IDK, expensive jeans or shirts with unusual prints. Fancy, yeah. Cool, maybe. Worthy of a whole paragraph of descriptions? Hell no.

But I do like it when people actually mention some clothes worn in a particular time period. Especially if it's done in passing, so as to remind the reader that the setting is there without making it too obvious.

I am so spoiled because at least half the people in my (admittedly tiny) ship share my kink for men in stockings and lacy lingerie, and therefore offer up lavish descriptions when the story can support it.

There is no real purpose for this comment, I just wanted to brag.

Oh agreed.

I guess it's just you and me OP. Even just a line about how a character dressed that day adds a lot interest for me. People only describe clothing when it's something fetishized (kinky stuff, men in drag, frock coats etc) and since that's not my thing I'm often frustrated...

No, it isn't just you. Collars, cuffs, watch-chains, waistcoats, tweed (clue's in the name folks), boots, trouser buttons and above all *nightshirts* - love them all, use them all copiously.

In my fandom "frock coats" aren't kink - just day wear.

If I may make a suggestion?

Check out Sarah J. Waldock's books:
- "Jane Fairfax - Bow Street Consultant" series, which are sequels to Jane Austen's "Emma." They started out as fanfiction, but they are very good.

- "Felicia and Robin mysteries" series, historical mysteries with original characters set during the early reign of Henry VIII. The characters live in Levenham, which was an important center of production of wool: the third book concentrates a lot on the manifacture process.

Hope it helps!

Definitely not fanfic, but if you want porny stuff with period clothing, you might want to look up a little novel called "Teleny". It varies from chapter to chapter (multiple authors), but some of it has a lot of descriptions of clothing.
