Understandable. (This is how I feel about Loki in the MCU, and Tony to a lesser extent.) I don't blame this fandom for being really into him, though: as far as characters go, he's probably the most likely to survive the damn series, and you know how people want their happy endings even in things set in crapsack worlds. I don't find him that bothersome myself, but even so, I can see the definite overdose in fandom.

Sort of unrelated, but I hate those damn pairing smushes. I can't tell Ereri and Eruri apart to save my life.

Actually, I would put money on him dying. A super-competent badass fighter who's older and more experienced than the main cast? Might as well stamp 'Obi Wan Kenobi' on his forehead.

intrigueing: (piper and trickster have no taste)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2013-12-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
No, I totally understand this. Even when a fandom darling is also my favorite character, I still get annoyed when they get ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE, and not just because it takes attention away from other character I also like. It also just...somehow causes me some kind of weird second-hand embarrassment. Like, I don't want people to be acting so ridiculously over my favorite character and making him/her into something oversaturated.

I'm really not surprised that fandom adores him; he IS a really fucking huge badass who's even better than Mikasa.

But is there really a huge difference in his characterization between the manga and anime? I'm not totally sure because I jumped ship to the anime as soon as I could (I'm sorry, but the art is GODAWFUL) but from what I've read of the manga it seems pretty consistant. And it's not just Levi either; everyone in the special operations unit have their moments of sentimentality and humanity.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
The anime has an additional scene or two of him showing his "softer" side (I think the one about the returned badge near the end is one). But most of them are straight from the manga.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Because of Levi's popularity, the anime does tend to replace other people's scenes with Levi's, and just gives him more scenes/opportunities to say wise word and save people in general, which makes him seem like he has a bigger leading role in the Survey Corps.
Ugh, I'm too tired to describe it, but the anime tends to make fit him more into a typical 'hero' role. The last episode, and the ova that came out is a perfect example of it

i feel you so hard

i was totally ambivalent about levi but the sheer preponderance across fandom made me lose most of my ongoing interest in snk :(

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I dropped the show when he was first introduced. I didn't get to see the trial but tumblr was full of gifs up him beating Eren up and it turned me off to him.

Secret 12 - Shingeki no Kyojin, Attack on Titan; Levi (character) oversaturation in fandom

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-12 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is from the anime "Shingeki No Kyojin" or "Atttack on Titan", with people standing around and over a defeated Titan against the sun, looking all dramatic and stuff.]

It really makes me uncomfortable that a character like Levi of Shingeki no Kyojin has this massive fanbase that almost completely dominates everything else in the fandom. Not that I am surprised (he fits the formula fangirls drool over) but it's just become an annoyance to me that not even Tumblr Savior can push over the rug and out of my sight.

He is half of the three most popular shippings (Ereri, Eruri, Levihan) that completely overshadow any other shippings and it's mostly smut or portraying Levi as this seductive, horny sex fiend. At least that's all I see of these pairings filtered over to my corners of fandom, I don't go looking for it.

It's either that or essays about Levi writing thousands of words in his defense on how he is some kind of tragic hero. And I kinda hate the anime for trying to paint him that way when in the manga he is just a grumpy guy whose seen a lot of shit. Definitely not this sentimental soul who hides behind a cold exterior his fans make him out to be.

I'm not a prude who doesn't like Not Safe For Work nor is there anything about his character that intrinsically bothers me. It's just the fact that I do not see him the way his fandom sees him and I'm forced to see him as a tragic hero sex fiend who always has rough hate sex with Erwin and loves to make Eren his uke (ugh). The fact that you can't even look at Eren or Hanji fanart without Levi all up in their business eighty percent of the time is beyond annoying. [annoyed face emoticon]

I've felt like this about so many dudes in so many fandoms. So many. Even when I like them, I'm just like, okay but can you not?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Its nice to see others that feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
He's boring, short, and fug.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
SNK fandom's top ships:
Levi/Eren
Levi/Erwin
Levi/Hanji
Levi/Mikasa
Levi/Petra
And maybe some Jean/Marco and Ymir/Christa thrown in there too.
I swear around 1,900 of the 2,000-ish Shingeki fics on ao3 are a Levi pairing of some sort.

DO YOU FEEL MY PAIN.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
As an Eremin shipper who doesn't care about Levi at all, I feel your pain. I feel it very, very much ;__; Not only does it involve one half of my otp and a character I couldn't care less about, I don't even understand the pairing's appeal. Usually I can understand a ship's appeal even if I don't like it, but all of the top (ereri) fics on ao3 are a2g AUs, so, like, even the shippers don't care about their canon dynamic????????? And yeah, I hate how eren is made to be levi's little submissive uke, wtf is that. disgroceting ;___;

I FEEL YOU. Ugh, I hate that little shit that is Levi.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I just looked into it (I was curious), and according to Pixiv the most popular pairings are:

-Levi/Eren
-Levi/Erwin
-Levi/Hanji
-Ymir/Christa
-Reiner/Bert
-Mikasa/Eren

It's bad, theres still too much Levi, but not that bad.

That's how I feel about all the antagonists ever (with a few exceptions). It irks me so much to see Loki being a "mischievous best enemy" of the Avengers whom nobody really hates (DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE DOING. WHAT ABOUT HAWKEYE.).

Although it isn't the woobification that nonplusses me (or rather, not the woobification alone), but rather the - how shall I put it? - neutralization. When a villain is turned into an ~okay person without any explanation whatsoever. All the "Moriarty and Joan are suddenly girlfriends" fics weird me out so much.

I hated that a lot when I was in the Megaman X fandom. There were only a handful of humanoid reploids so people LOVED turning some of them into lovable goofs ... and totally forgetting the goddamn GENOCIDES that they unrepentantly took part in.

I could deal with his popularity in fandom, but what I can't deal with is that they took Hanji's role in the manga and gave it to Levi in the anime because he's a fan favorite. *forever bitter*

I'm way more annoyed by the constant "Jean is a horse" jokes in the fandom, rather than the Levi stuff.

That being said, I occasionally reblog some fan art of ships that include Levi if they're nicely drawn on tumblr, but I don't ship him with anyone at all... I just don't see him in a relationship.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Levi is my fav. character and I feel you so much, OP :C I say, I'm glad for all the Levi's merchandise but some of them and the fandom's reaction for him can be a biiiit ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see much of the essays or meta about him. Everything on my dash is pairings (some of which I've blacklisted to no avail), image/gifsets, or jokes about him, which I wouldn't mind if I didn't see them everywhere.

I honestly thought he was a fan favorite because he's easy to make fun of or base jokes around and he doesn't seem to have any irredeemable flaw in his personality.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Did we watch the same show? I didn't see him as a tragic hero at all....

The portrayal of Levi as a suave sex God is hilarious ngl
