Have you ever recieved a bad review?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Flip side of the above: have people left bad reviews on your work and did you respond to them?

The weirdest I ever got was when someone left a review on an HP fic I wrote to say that it was terrible and unrealistic because wizards were celebrating Christmas, and wizards wouldn't DO that. I replied (was 16 at the time, hadn't yet learned not to engage) that they did in canon (I mean, it's not like I was writing an AU, it was standard trio in the standard timeline) which got a very weird response about how they'd never noticed Christmas in the books and thus my fic still was horrible for making the problem "so obvious" when other fic writers and JKR managed to keep it "smooth."

It's been years and every once and a while I still catch myself wondering what the heck that person was smoking.

Not a "real" one, no. The only negative comments I've gotten on my fic were from someone who spammed all my fics for a certain pairing with angry rants about how nobody should write that pairing because this other pairing (which involved no one who had appeared in any of my stories) was clearly superior.

Someone accused me of hating the original material and I was very confused.

Yes and I'll admit that a few times I flipped my shit over it even though the reviewer wasn't trying to be insulting.

I wrote a really terrible script-style Inuyasha/Pokemon crossover in when I was 13 (so in 2003) and someone left a review for it a year or two ago saying "that was awful. never wright anything ever again" and that it gave them cancer and was mind terrorism because it was soooo awful.

I still laugh at it because eight year old shitty fanfic is apparently SUPR SRS BNS

I wrote a fanfic where one of the main characters fucked twenty other characters over the course of the show, and some dude got mad at me because it was "depraved" haha.

The worst was someone telling me I was selfish for not updating after my brother died.

The one that turned me off writing Supernatural fanfic is a toss-up between the person who went into extreme detail about how my fic would have been so much better if the sex had been between Sam and Dean instead of Castiel and Sam!Lucifer, to the point of PMing me about whether I would do a rewrite, and the person who seemed to believe that not returning someone's declaration of love when you've just woken up from a coma wherein you were in Everything Is Perfectville married to a different person warrants being left in the Devil's hands.

I got one saying "This is so ugly story!" which was impassioned but so brief and incoherent that it was mostly endearing. It was kind of a sensitive topic, so they were probably an ESL reader trying to tell me they were offended. ^^

When I was 12 someone said LMAO on my fic and I thought they were calling me a "lame-o" so I deleted it angrily.

Most of the ones I got were on FFN and were from people who didn't read the summary or didn't get my jokes. This was from when I was 12-15 mostly so I don't know how well-written those jokes were and they were probably other 12-15 year olds. So, shrug.

I got one recently that was...really hard to figure out if it was a bad review or not? Like it had some specific canon-based comments which could be read as "this characterization makes no sense because X!" but stopped short of actually saying that (which I would've understood and respected, if disagreed with), and the rest of the review was pretty friendly. So I responded to it in a very "hahah, yeah, agree to disagree" kind of way and thanked them for the comment anyway.

Back in my early days I got a couple of "But character X ISN'T GAY" types of comments and tried to be like "Well no. Not canonically. But..." and had some surprisingly low-key conversations about that so idk, for all my fear of confrontation/wank regarding reviews I've never actually had to deal with any.
