This show killed the Sherlock Holmes fandom on LJ. Cox & Co was my personal favorite but really all the comms went to shit once they allowed people to crosspost their BBC Sherlock stuff. The BBC Sherlock fandom was huge from the outset and there was no reason not to let them stay in their own comms instead of overtaking the good ones.

Yup. I don't mind the BBC fandom, but I hate how it's not properly contained categorized as an adaptation that is distinct from ACD canon (or Granada, or Ritchie, or Russian). Hell, on AO3 people constantly, constantly tag BBC fics with both "Sherlock (TV)" and "Sherlock Holmes - ACD". In spite of the fact that there's a whole other tag called "Sherlock Holmes and Related Fandoms" that they could unite their Holmes-related stuff under.

...I take it neither of you saw the wasteland Tumblr became, the night of the onions? I mean, yeah, some of it was funny, at first, but then it really started getting out of control. All the cooking blogs were like, "WHY ARE THERE SHERLOCK POSTS WHEN I SEARCH FOR FRENCH ONION SOUP" which is fine for an hour or so, but It. Went. On. For. DAYS.

night of the onions

This sounds like a really low-budget horror movie.

(As someone who is not on Tumblr, what is the story of the onions?)

It honestly wouldn't be so bad, if the majority of them would actually READ THE BOOKS. But I guess that's too taxing for their poor little brains. And some of them are outright proud of the fact they've never read the Canon. That's the attitude that gets MY goat.

What puzzles me is the attitude that just because you've watched a movie or a TV show based on a book that you OMG HAVE to read the book. Why? Can't you just enjoy the show for what it is without having to investigate the source material or all the other adaptations? It's entertainment, not a thesis. I'm sure the same finger-waving isn't aimed at people who read the book but never watch the movie.

I don't understand why so many people like to take something fun and get all snooty about it. Oh, you watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy but didn't read the books? You must be stupid. Watched the anime but didn't read the manga? Oh, you're not a true fan. Like Sherlock/Elementary/House/RDJ? Read ACD or GTFO. Honestly, it's so ridiculous. Stop trying to be everyone's English Lit professor and let people have their fun.

nayrt

It's not "OMG YOU HAVE TO READ THE BOOKS." It's that they are proud to dismiss the books and say that the show is way more important and better - not that they personally enjoy the show and aren't interested in the books, but that lol, no1curr about the books and BBC rules all and everyone should be thankful the show came along and "fixed" the fandom, with no more silly Victorian mystery-solving guys, and why would we NOT want the obviously-superior show to invade every corner of fandom?

Also the ones who make big claims about how the show is so close to canon without ever reading canon.

That is the kind of non-book-readers that make ACD fans annoyed. Not the people who simply aren't interested in the books.

Didn't read the books? Then get the fuck out of the book fandom! If you're not one of the literally thousands of asshole BBC Sherlock fans that's posting your work in in the ACD fandom, then I don't care if you ever read the books or not. The show is a separate entity that bears little resemblance to the source material and I honestly don't care what people think of it so long as they keep it contained to their fandom spaces.

The fans of this show are like locusts. They're assholes and bullies and they literally ruin other fandoms by injecting themselves and all things BBC Sherlock in those fandoms. I have no problem with BBC Sherlock, but the fans suck.
