Why do you hate feminism?

You know, I kind of like the no-nonsense approach here. Just get right down to brass tacks.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
OT, but I've always wondered where that phrase comes from. Why brass tacks?

Woah, I haven't watched the series and have no idea about the White Queen, but I find shows retconning how much power women did not actually have "way back then" can be rose-tinted apologism for the past. Anything that pretends it was better sets my teeth on edge. I very much didn't like Hiddleston's wooing of the French princes in the Hollow Crown, because although Shakespeare's script couldn't be changed, the camera and acting seemed to agree that the fact that she had absolutely NO choice in the matter, was romantic and not incredibly rapeily fucked up.

It can sometimes be a fine line however. And I'm sure women often kicked ass in ways that were obliterated by history. But they were treated appallingly too.

I'm actually more bothered by the opposite, where they make the past look even worse than it was. Makes people think we've made more progress than we really have. But I get where you're coming from too (my girlfriend tends to agree more with you than me too). It really is a very fine line to walk.

Uh, women could have a GREAT deal of power in times like the Middle Ages. I suggest you read up on history more. Being treated like horrible doesn't mean women didn't run households, join guilds, and run shit. There are reasons why the preferred state for a woman in many time periods was that of a widow. Widows had /power/ man.

The secret is boring so I'll bite

"Why do you hate feminism?"

Because of the coercion, the fear mongering it promotes and the insistence that women are these fragile little beings that shatter that the tiniest sign of adversity and therefore the rest of the world must cater to their every whim or they'll fall appart. Finally, the fact that Feminism has done more to convince the public that women have no agency than any other actor in the public sphere.

TL;DR I'm a woman and I dislike feminism, it stopped being about empowering women and is now mostly about scaring them into being feminist.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
We have very different experiences of feminism, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
You have a very peculiar definition of feminism. And you know the reason why you felt the need to state that you're a woman? It's because that particular definition of feminism reeks of misogynist MRA funk. Now, I'm not saying you don't have a right to your opinions, but you should probably be a little bit worried when you find yourself in the same boat as those guys.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not feminism, though. Feminism is about stopping people treating women like dolls without agency. That's possibly what the likes of Fox News tells you what feminism is, but what you're describing is misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You have no idea what feminism is then. Or you have been told what feminism is by a man. I feel sorry for you that you see dealing with the reality women live in as fear mongering. I guess we all imagined people trying to take away our rights this year.

Go study history some.

Secret 2 - Anna Neville, The White Queen (historical drama TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Anna Neville, as portrayed by Faye Marsay, from the British historical drama TV series "The White Queen". She is a woman with light skin, blue eyes, long brown hair pulled back and wearing an expensive-looking royal golden dress and a big pendant.]

I felt like the series exaggerated her importance as a historical figure. There's no way she was as influential as Margaret Beaufort or Elizabeth Woodville. We barely know anything about her and it's ridiculous to make up a cool story and imply the series is some triumphant tale about powerful women in history.

Hey transcriptanon,

The writing on this secret was making me go cross-eyed, so I didn't even try to decipher it, knowing that you would have a transcription. So, I thank you and my eyes thank you.

Sincerely,
Random anon who appreciates you

Minor correction: Anne Neville, not Anna. Thanks for all your hard work.

I don't know anything about this book, but my problem with this sort of thing is that there are PLENTY of powerful, interesting women in history.

It's just that people don't think YA audiences want to hear about them.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
I want a movie about Emilia Plater. :c

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
This confuses me, as having watched "The White Queen", Anne ended up being the biggest pawn of them all. If this was Survivor, she'd definitely be called a coat-tail rider who made very few moves of her own (and the crucial one she DID make blew up in her face).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well she is the main character... they had to make people root for her somehow.

People make up stories all the time? I mean, I'm watching a show where apparently George Washington was fighting the forces of evil, literally.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Like, did you know Abraham Lincoln was secretly a vampire hunter?

It's in a book somewhere so it must be true.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
She's the main character? From the promotional copy and stuff I assumed Elizabeth Woodville was the main character. I may finally check this out, for all that I don't expect much from it.
