It is sad, yes. :(

(I say this as someone who has yet to watch the last season, but I really enjoyed the rest of it. I can see the appeal of Chandler/Kent, but totally understand what you mean about it seeming sort of one-sided.)

IA. It seems to me that most UK crime dramas tend to go the same way; they start out great, and the writers decide (Are told?) that all their innovative, original material in the first season worked so well, they're going to have to do it again. And again. And over and over and over again.

Exception: L&O: UK but the formula of the show prevented that. (Did I mention how much I like L&O:UK? Consider it mentioned.)

Except that Whitechapel went from police procedural to Gothic horror in its final series. Weirdly it worked rather well, but it was a quantum genre shift.

As for Kent and Chandler ... Doomed. Chandler was a poster boy for neurosis based asexuality. Poor Kent would seriously have his work cut out for him even if he didn't have spectacularly bad timing when it came to making his big move.

AYRT

Ah, see, I never saw the final series. Though I can't see how much more "Gothic horror" than series 1 the show could get.....As you can probably tell from my L&O comment, I'm one of those strange people who actually likes the police procedure part of police procedurals.....

Secret 6 - Whitechapel (TV series)

[Picture is Joseph Chandler, as portrayed by Rupert Penry-Jones, and Ray Miles, as portrayed by Phil Davis, from the drama TV series "Whitechapel"? They are two men, one looking older than the first, with rosy light skin and short brown and blond hair, respectively. They are both dressed in somewhat old-fashioned looking suits and looking serious.]

I think the last season of this show was undoubtedly its weakest, but I'm still gutted taht there won't be another series, because I want more father/son moments between these two.

Bonus secret: I don't get Chandler/Kent AT ALL, since in the show it's so one-sided.

Yeah, that's why I prefer my series to be mini. Like, no longer than ten episodes. After that they become shite, or at least there appear some episodes that are shite, and I find that I'm ill prepared to like works whose quality is greatly uneven. (also, longer series are in more danger of getting cancelled midway through. I hate long-ish cancelled stuff. It stays with me in the form of unfinished business)

I personally could not watch the last season (because of squicks), but I feel ya on the Chandler&Miles relationship. When I just began watching Whitechapel, I went looking for fic in hopes of finding some epic friendshippy gen, but no :/ Everything ever was Kent/Chandler, a pairing that is quite beyond me. Fandom, I'm disappoint.

There's some "epic friendshippy gen" fic here (and more if you click "go earlier" at the bottom of the page) if you're still interested. :)

DA Thank-you, anon! I didn't know about that com.

I'm with you, anon. The last series was, well, weird, and definitely not the strongest, but I don't think I'd mind so much about not getting another series if they'd finished that narrative arc, just so I'd get some closure. But oh well. I guess that's what fanfic's for. :/

I'm totally with you on Chandler/Miles, too. I always loved that dynamic/pairing more than Chandler/Kent, which has always seemed very one-sided to me, too. I mean, I get the Chandler/Kent appeal, but I just don't see much canon basis for it. But people will ship what they will, so.

i gave up on this after the first two seasons. i need rupert penry-jones to be in things i want to watch.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He was in that period drama. I'd like to see more of him too, but I don't know where to start

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
What period drama?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked it up, Persuasion (2007).
Oh, and he's in mini-series Silk, but I couldn't get into it mainly because it's too serious. They had that scene where a man punched a woman in the stomach, it was cringe worthy.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I really didn't like the last series, but I'm sad it's gone as well. If only they hadn't decided to dump ALL the good bits that the series had been building up to into the last ep, the season might have worked out better.

Also, I'd at least like a special to wrap things up, after that killer cliff-hanger.

[personal profile] starry_starrrz 2013-12-20 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Whitechapel, but I was surprised it lasted as long as it did tbh. The premise didn't really lend itself to being anything more than a one off series.

(I've got a total thing for Kent/Chandler though. The unrequited angstiness is half the draw for me.)
