Re: Have I missed out on anything?

That's interesting! So when you go away to college/university you have to find an apartment to rent on your own or does the school help you find them? For example, my college had dorms but they also had a list of student friendly apartments you could go through, so if the dorms were full or something the school would still help you out and take some of the stress out of the situation.

Another question, in Norway university is paid for for residents, right? (If I have this information wrong just ignore this question.) So do you get like a living stipend to help pay with your private housing or is it expected that you'll be working along with schooling?

Well for some it starts at High School, so. Anyway the school does not help us at all that is the student r
Unions job. But they don't have a lot to offer, just the student flats connected to the institution which is not a lot and in some cities temporary housing on the floors in like the P.E facilities. Other than that it is up to us, except the extreme lack of housing in some cities it is no biggie.

We pay tuition well between 50 and 150£ each semester, but other than that like everything else they are state run*. The way we pay for and survive our education is trough "the states borrow box"* (statens lånekasse) which is a mix between loans and scholarships, 40% is made into a scholarship each year as long as you pass all your subjects in the year. Rest is a loan, but we like that loan it is safe, have low interest, you can pause it if you have low income or get a child for a while. (Also get it paid off if you move and work in some of the places in Norway that people move away from and they need people). Anyway it is 8900€ a year over 10 months with August and January being the times you get 1000€ extra for school supplies and moving/deposit and such, rest of the 10 months we get 708€ a month. With rent usually being about 400€ and food a minimum of 150€ each month we are not rich. So most people work part time. I feel like I forgot to mention something... Oh right! You can get the scholarship without the loan if you live at home, but if you take out a loan all of it will be a loan. Hm, also you can get a loan for tuition at private universities in Norway and a lot of universities abroad. Did I cover the question? If not feel free to ask away Anon.

*tho private universities exist.
*i just directly translated it for laughs, state run loans basically.

You did cover the question, thank you for answering! It actually sounds like a really great system. At least from the USA perspective, but then I sometimes think any other system is better than the student loans and college system we have going on here.

One of the best In the world, everyone gets access to higher education and it is in no way shape or form based on whom your parents are. It needs a lot of improving, but hadn't it been for it I would have never got the chance to go to a university... Anyway that was enough bragging about Norway for today in some ways I think the Swedes and Danes do it better...

It might be important to mention we apply at the same we web page with the same deadline no matter which subject or school you apply for, just plot in a list with 7 choices the top being what you most sant to get info. Then the unbiased department thing go trough your application making sure your grades are good enough to get in based on the pre set requirements, step two for them is choosing those with the higher grades if the spots are filled up then on to your second choice and so on, until they hopefully find a university (and subject) you can get into. You are also automatically out on the waiting list for all choices above the one you applied to. Then everyone logs into the we page on the same day and get the info about which school you got into and if and which spot on the waiting list you tare one if you didn't get into your top choice, then they also put all unfolded seats so to speak out for the public and those are first come first serve (as long as your grades pass the minimum requirement). The last part lasts about a week, you also have to accept your spot, but that is not binding for you p, so if you get into something else you can give up your spot to the one first in line not he waiting list without any issues.

Which means we have greater control over where we end up studying and we all know at the exact same time (or at least week) so the whole renting flats system is made up around it p, the flats go out for rent around that time and so on.
