I'm not an expert on Elizabethan lingo so what would happen if she 'merried' him?

I don't know - always thought getting 'merried' was more of a Victorian kink.

Well in the Elizabethan era, "merry" was a mild oath meaning "by the Virgin Mary." So maybe the Virgin Queen did indeed merry him!

Since when was the 50th special being called a movie?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Probably since it was a special and aired in a number of cinema's (especially across America).

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
1: People merry for a lot of reasons. How was it political? Political merriment is an impossibility anyway.

2: Feature length episode =/= movie.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
The original idea kind of came End of Time.

Well it goes back as far as "The Shakespeare Code" and I thought it was silly then. So spending a whole subplot on it was not my idea of an awesome time.

IDK, she wasn't gonna get married (lol merried) for political reasons, so why not marry a guy she thought was hot stuff, who had a magical flying ship and could come give her a duty-free booty call now and again? Elizabeth know what she wants and she wants that Doctor D.

Especially because he's modern and wouldn't rip her off her rights as a sovereign or a woman. He wouldn't tell her that her only place is to give birth to an heir.

Because when she was that young, she was dangling the possibility of marrying her as bait in various political games. Unmarried Elizabeth was an opportunity for ambitious foreign rulers, which might keep them from invading England if they thought they had a chance of getting it peacefully.

Because the marriage of a queen is always political. It can't be anything else. Unmarried, she had that as a prime bargaining chip in making allies with foreign nations as well as her own nobles, who all knew damn well that whoever she married would affect the balance of power at court. Elizabeth I couldn't just marry for love or teh lulz, alien in a flying box or no.

Not to mention that Elizabeth I may have had personal reasons for not marrying as well, reasons that are entirely valid given her personal history.

Secret 9 - Doctor Who, 50th Anniversary special (warning for SPOILERS)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for Doctor Who

[Picture is The Doctor and Queen Elizabeth I from the 50th Anniversary special of the TV series "Doctor Who". He has light skin and short brown hair and is wearing a brown suit, while she has long, wavy red-hair, large, expensive jewelry and a golden dress. She is looking at him sort of surprised.]

The idea that she would marry him annoys me so much. It's a stupid political move and completely unreasonable.

(Basically I didn't like the movie and pick on everything, from Rose's ugly clothes to a too easy resolution.)

Secret because: Everyone loved this movie. I don't want to look like a hater.

Day of the Doctor was pretty terrible.

I mean it had its moments, but overall it was just poorly written.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely unsurprising, tbh. Did it proceed from start to finish like a gerbil mainlining crystal meth?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-12-21 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Did you spell it that way to make sure you weren't the only one annoyed?

I wasn't aware this episode was well liked.

Most of what I saw was "this was not what I wanted" and "why did they pick this plot?"

Don't feel bad, OP, you don't have to like it.

Ten marrying Good Queen Bess was verbal canon for so long but I don't think we really needed to see it happen. The whole thing felt really awkward especially after how Ten's love for Rose was the main thing of his arc.

That wasn't Rose!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-21 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
You don't look like a hater, you look like a total fucking moron. Your hilarious misspelling aside, I find it endlessly amusing that you didn't understand that Billie Piper wasn't playing Rose. She even spelled it out in simple terms so small children like my 5 year old could understand it, but you didn't get it. That takes a special kind of stupid, tbbh.

idk, according to Moffat, women want to get married as quickly as possible. The idea of a virgin, or Virgin Queen, is likely to induce extreme cognitive dissonance and must be resolved.

Oh come on, Anon. There is no reason for this to be a secret. While I personally didn't mind the Elizabeth stuff, I am well aware that 'm probably in a minority, as I have seen a tonne of negative comment on that bit of the plot.

Also, as has been pointed out, that wasn't Rose.

Elizabeth was fail in general. Lots of people have pointed it out and I think it's generally regarded as the weakest part of the episode.
