...Just commenting to say that this picture reminds me of those Amazin' Fruit gummi bears. Do they still even make those?

No, they don't. :(

If you want to buy a fursuit and go to a convention, I don't think they'll keep you from entering. It could be fun. (Then again, how much do fursuits cost? I don't know your budget . . .)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
ime, $1000 or more for something that isn't a pile of crap

afaik, you don't have to be into the sex angle to be a furry. Nothing wrong with just liking to wear mascot costumes.

(I've heard they're really hot and stuffy, though.)

I always imagine those outfits to be hot, stifling, and smelling of sweat and possibly urine. What's stopping you from dressing up, anyway? Or just get a snuggie if you crave warmth.

1) you don't have to be a furry to wear a mascot costume. I know lots of costumers who make amazing fursuits and mascots and have never identified as "furry,"

2) no, they're actually quite uncomfortable. Sweaty, even if you can manage to install a fan inside the head, and often weighs more than you expected.

I know people who've done this? From what they say, they are indeed warm. As in, fuck it's hot in here. As in, some of them have cooling systems built in, that's how warm. Reportedly, a well-built one is not bad to wear, but it's not like comfy clothes - it's a performance, and they're a bit heavy. Sorry!

Secret 7 - Furry fandom, fursuits

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is people wearing up fursuits of all colors of the rainbow, plus white. I think they are mostly canids, but there might be a cat and a fox somewhere in there? It's hard to tell. Anyway, they are lined up against a wall and holding each a giant crayola stick matching their color.]

Sometimes I wish I was a furry. Not for any sexual element, but just so I could wear a cute animal costume.

Probably because I always picture furry costume to be really warm and cozy.

Haha I was thinking something similar to this the other day.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2013-12-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh, I think it'd be cool to really be into something as hardcore as furries seem to be into being furries. I mean, I got my hobbies, but it's not really a lifestyle like furries make their hobby into.

Honestly it always seemed like they'd be hot, itchy, sticky and uncomfortable to me. Possibly heavy?

I did see a really awesome Aliens costume once with these cool stilt-pogo-stick legs that looked like fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
on that type of costume: when I was a kid, my mom made me a penguin plush suit. I wore it outside, in february, with snow and all and it was still SWEATING HOT inside...

so actually I'm pretty sure they're quite uncomfortable unless you're outside in the dead of winter in Russia, I suppose. but if you want to have one and you can afford one, why not? have your fun, don't let anyone take that away from you.

Buy footie pajamas.

ugh those suits look uncomfortable and isolating to me...
I was under the impression that the desire to assume a cartoonish animal identity was what qualified you as a furry, and that the sex stuff was secondary. Was I wrong?

Go for it.

Full-body costumes in general are very warm. A full-body fur-covered costume is HOT; like another commenter said, it's not uncommon for cooling points or entire cooling fans/systems to be built into the suits. Don't forget to take frequent water breaks (some people even wear camelpaks under their suits!). You could always do what's called a 'partial', just a head and whatever extremities would be visible beyond clothing, those tend to be cooler, cheaper, and easier to store and transport.

If you enjoy it, though, you'll figure out a way to keep yourself comfortable while in costume. :}

Could always split the difference and get kigurumi. :D (I just made some custom for myself, because I wanted something weird. They are sooooooo comfy and warm! I look forward to dorking around a convention in the evenings in them.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that if you want to wear cute animal costumes, you're already a furry, and that's nothing to be ashamed of.

Just to let you know, there are some incredible dickheads and pervs who are into fursuiting. There's also a lot of crazy, unstable people in Furry fandom as well.

Or, just get some fuzzy footed pajamas.

They even come in animal shapes (sort of).

Or you could go with something a little less

Or you could go with something that just looks cute and cozy, like this:

I think some of them are really beautiful. And honestly the sexual element is a very small part of furry culture. I had a furry roommate (lol) in college and I learned a lot :P

Good luck affording one. Decent-looking ones, at least, are expensive as fuck.

But you don't have to be a furry to want to wear animal costumes.
Hell, I've worn cat ears and tails long before I knew furry ever existed.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
I really like some people in the furry fandom, and the image of it that they present. Not sure if I'd be willing to spend that kind of money though. It seems like it would be fun to go all-out like that, but don't fursuits cost thousands?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-24 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
The sexual part is minor. I had some preconceived notions on furries until a friend of mine mentioned she was one. It encouraged me to do a bit of research and the comms are actually pretty cool.
