I'm freaking sick of people claiming that the backlash/network reacting how it did [and GLAAD protesting] to what Phil Robertson said is "a free speech" issue. It's not - no one is saying he doesn't have a right to say what he did. What it is, if anything, is about the consequences of speech - which, let's face it: The network, and all the rest are in their rights to decide they don't want to be associated with that kind of speech [which, yes, from what I've heard does veer close, if not into, hate speech territory in some respects.]

I'm sick of the whole stupid thing. And I'm saying this as a hella queer woman. Like, a backwater hick clinging to his guns and his Jeebus doesn't like gay people? I'M SHOCKED.

I hate the idea that something has to be surprising in order to be worth objecting to. I'm never surprised by these things but I still think it's important to say that it's not okay.

Feel free, I'm not saying it's not objectionable. I'm just saying it's tiring as hell. I can't bring myself to care about every single infraction, I'd burn out in a day. To be honest the backlash that's come from the fans of the show towards LGBT+ people (despite us not having anything to do with A&E's decision) is about a million and a half times worse than usual hick drivel, so I wish everyone had just rolled their eyes and moved on. It's exhausting.

Fair enough. I don't expect everyone to do it, I just don't like people telling me to stop when I do have the energy for it.

As another queer woman, I do agree. If it had been one thing where he said something stupid it actually wouldn't have bugged me. People say and believe stupid shit all the time, and I've actually heard worse directed at me.

It just gets me that so many people are rallying around this because his ~free speech~ actually kind of confuses and, with the level and the fact their directing it at people who've nothing to do with the decision, horrifies me.

EXACTLY! Like what were these people expecting? That when the cameras turn off, he takes off his beard, puts on a tweed jacket and goes to his second job as a professor at Cambridge?

I say this is is karma biting A&E in the ass for building an exploitative show around a backwoods family. Parading them around like some hick sideshow. They got what they deserve.

I'm sick of everybody just brushing off and ignoring the racist shit he said while solely focusing on the homophobic stuff. They're both horrible and both need to be fucking called out.

Actually, the articles I've read do mention the racist stuff [and point out how fucking stupid what he said on that is] - the reason a number seem to focus on the homophobia is because of things he's said before. Namely, that he's said "homosexuals are full of murder"* in an interview.

*which makes the "He's hating the sin, not the sinner!" defense kinda ridiculous and sad

Most of the stuff I've read and seen on the news just glosses over the racist shit he said or leaves it as some sort of footnote. It is disappointing, to say the least. Ugh, he's such a shitbag. He really said homosexuals are full of murder? Was this in the same interview or a different one?

Ick, I'm sorry to hear that because both things are pretty horrid. He really did, though it's a little hard to tell since most articles are just putting in that "He also said this!" - but near as I can tell it was a different interview? I do another thing that's been mentioned is a different interview with GQ where he basically said homosexuality will lead to bestiality, so it's possible from that interview [though there are also mentions of a clip where he's preaching some pretty hateful homophobic shit too that it might from.]

This. What some conservatives like to forget it that free speech is like their dream of a capitalist market. Everyone has the right to do something and make their own decisions and speak about them like any company can operate independently without intervention/censorship.
And if something/someone does something, they have to face the consequences. If a company makes the wrong move the consequence is bankruptcy. If someone says something, even with free speech there is a consequence.

Tbh, it's not just the conservatives that forget that.

He's a guy from Duck Dynasty.

He basically said "homosexuality is a sin!" and "Blacks were happy under the Jim Crow laws!" The reason people are focusing on the former is because he's got a track record of saying shit like that, including having said crap "Homosexuals are full of murder!"
